There can be a heaviness that comes with parenting a child with a disability.

If you don’t have a child with a disability, then the heaviness I’m speaking of might not be what you have in mind.

It’s not sadness that my child is different.
It’s not shame.
Nor is it a burden.

The heaviness is a longing for what he longs for. More than anything, I want my child to know he belongs just as he is.

But I don’t speak of it. I rarely think about it. But it lives deep inside of me. It is always present even if I don’t acknowledge it day to day.

That heaviness is releases when something ordinary happens- like receiving a lovely note from a teacher, when they make a friend in the playground, or seeing them feel pride over an accomplishment.

It’s as if we are receiving a note from the Creator- whispering into that unspoken heavy place saying, “All is well. All is well.
They are different.
&- they belong.
All is well.”

The heaviness will come back.
& I’m okay with that.
Because the heaviness I’m speaking of is the weight of love.

It weighs a bit more when you love someone who is more vulnerable.

& that is extra weight I am grateful to carry.
