’Twas almost Christmas and all through the house, the snacks were disappearing and so was my motivation.

No room for a tree, but a poinsettia will do, small, scrappy, but still a little festive too.

The blankets are out, (although they're always out), the kettle is on, and I’m fully prepared to hibernate a little early.

If you’re still bustling, I salute you.
If you’re already horizontal under a pile of blankets, you’re in good company.

Almost Christmas. 🎄Have the best day ever!

This week is kind of a wildcard, don't cha think?

The days blur together. There are treats everywhere. The schedule makes no sense. You might be wearing real pants, or you might not, truly who knows?

It’s busy, it’s cozy, it’s mildly unhinged, and somehow both loud and slow at the same time.

I’ve been working on a Countdown to Christmas puzzle, one day at a time.

And the puzzle says, Christmas is almost here! 🩷

Solstice is a threshold.

An inner stillness where things get quiet enough to notice what’s ready to fall away.

There is magic in the quietness as we're held through the longest night, nature dreaming herself into a new cycle, the new moon activating shifts in the subconscious.

Even now, when the plants appear asleep, they’re still present. Their voices move differently this time of year, subtle, steady, easier to hear if we’re not rushing to fill the space.

There’s wisdom in the dark. Not as answers, but as contemplation.

Happy Solstice

This time of year, we lean into kitchen magic without even thinking about it.

Cinnamon for warmth.

Rosemary to keep memory close.

Clove for a little extra protection when the days feel heavy.

These aren’t big gestures. They're quiet, familiar companions for the darker stretch of the year.

The Dark Season Reflections journal was made in that same spirit.

It's a guided journal for the weeks when the light is low. A place to slow down, take stock, and explore what this season is stirring in for you.

Okay, so here’s a Nordic myth I came across that is really cool.

You know that mushroom, Amanita? Those red and white mushrooms you find in the forest that kind of scream Christmas.

Yep. The hallucinogenic ones.

In parts of the Nordic and northern world, they were taken as a journey tool to fly to the North Star and have visions for the year ahead.

I don’t know if people actually consumed them directly because they’re poisonous, but one possibility is that they fed them to the reindeer and then drank the reindeer p*e. The urine would still be psychoactive, but without the poisonous effects.

Kind of gross, but I guess it gets the job done without dying.😂

Does that explain flying reindeer and a magical man in red and white showing up midwinter?

Red and white mushrooms. Red and white clothing. Visions of flying through the sky. Reindeer involved. A sense of moving toward the North Star. Hell yeah! Why not?

Hope your Yule is magical.

There’s an old midwinter night in the Germanic world called Mother’s Night.

Mother’s Night is often celebrated on the night before the winter solstice, December 20, as the opening of the Yule season.

It doesn’t get talked about much, probably because there isn’t a lot written down about it. What we do know is that it was connected to the mōdru, the ancestral mothers and protective female spirits tied to the household and the family line.

It was a night for acknowledging what came before you, the women, the line, the ancestors that carried life forward when nothing was growing yet.

That could be a Goddess. Or your actual ancestors. Or the women who made you who you are.

Not that you need yet another thing to celebrate in this season overflowing with stuff, but in case you do want to honor Mother's Night in some way, here are some ways to do it.

🌿Cook a meal using a recipe from your maternal line, or one that reminds you of the women who fed you.
🌿Tell stories about the women who shaped you, blood or chosen.
🌿Light a single candle and let it burn while you remember who carried things before you.
🌿Take a moment to name what you’ve inherited, for better or worse.

That’s really what Mother's Night is all about, the wise women who have shown us the way.

This time of year is busy. I feel ya.

The kind of busy where you tell yourself you don’t even have time to brush your teeth, let alone sit down and “reflect on the year.”

But here’s the thing: reflecting on your year, and what you want to bring into the next one, doesn’t have to be done all at once.

And no, you don’t need some long, quiet, candle-lit afternoon for it either.

Dark Season Reflections was made for real life. Little moments. Bits and pieces. When you can grab them.

For example, here are two questions from the Calendula section of the journal:

• What grew in your life this year, even if it was small or quiet (or loud)?
• What warmed your spirit this year, moments of joy, connection, relief, or unexpected ease?

You might notice an answer while washing dishes. Or out on a walk. Or three days from now, when something suddenly lands.

Perfect. That’s exactly how this begins.

Dark Season Reflections is a plant-guided journal, meant to be moved through slowly, in pieces, with the support of different plant allies.

If you liked these questions and want to go deeper, the link’s right here.

A plant-guided digital journal for winter reflection and year-end clarity. Simple prompts, seasonal support, and plant allies to help you look at what shifted this year and what’s coming next.

The deepest transformation doesn’t happen in the light. It begins in the dark, in the descent.

There’s a reason so many old stories send the heroine down, into the cave, the hollow, the underworld of her own knowing.

That’s where power is reclaimed. That’s where we remember who we are.

Winter has a way of doing that, too.

If you’re feeling it, you already know.

The woman you’ve been is stepping aside for the woman you are becoming.

And if you want a little support while you’re in this in-between place, I finally finished something for you.

Dark Season Reflections is live!

A dark season love note 💜

If you find yourself feeling a little feral this month, all the sugar, all the people, all the stuff...

If you find yourself one cookie away from howling at the moon.

Here’s the plan:

Eat the snacks.
Eat the weird snacks.
Eat the snacks you hid from other people.

Hide from the relatives you can’t deal with.
Take your plate and wander off like a raccoon.
Sit in the garage with the dog.
Pretend to be taking out the trash and just… don’t come back for a while.

Go outside and scream into the winter wind. The neighbors are used to you by now. They'll just nod and carry on.

You might get back to semi-normal in January.

Then again, maybe not. It's the dark season!

I’ve been making a thing.

It’s not finished, but it’s sooo close. I'll let you know as soon as it's ready.

It’s about winter, truth, and what happens when we sit down and reflect.

Which is funny, because I’ve never been great at sitting still and doing reflections. I've always had the mind of na I don't need to do that. I’d rather hike, move, make medicine, do something, anything 😆

So the fact that I’m making this at all is… a little surprising.

And the wild part is, I’ve gone through it myself, and it actually helped me get clearer. Who da thunk!

I think you're gonna like it!
