Did you know, asking about transfer rates can be a very common interview question when choosing a midwife.
There is nothing wrong with the question and the heart behind it makes sense. But, please remember transfer rates are not a metric of how good a midwife someone is. A high transfer rate does not mean a poor midwife anymore than a low transfer rate indicates a better midwife.
If you develop pre-eclampsia, you WANT a midwife who will transfer you to a higher level of care for you and your baby’s safety. If your baby is having decreased heart tones in early labor it is 100% appropriate to transfer care.
Transferring care means we are doing exactly what we are trained to do, continually assessing your and baby’s well being and shifting to hospital based care when indicated.
