Morgan County Herald, Saturday, February 4, 1899

Strange Case - The following clipped from the Caldwell Press refers to a former teacher of Manchester Twp. who is widely and favorably known in Morgan Co., - "Rev. D. S. Welch, pastor of the M.E. church at Macksburg has created a sensation in that quiet little village. Thursday he left home, telling his family he was going to Marietta on business. At that place he wrote to his wife and certain members of the congregation that he would not return, giving no reason for his actions. In his letter he made provisions for his family and the settlement of a few debts. Nothing has been heard from him. He has been pastor of the M.E. church in Macksburg for the past five years, and was highly respected in the community, and from all we can learn there was no domestic trouble. He leaves a wife and three children, the oldest, a son 17 years of age.
