We are halfway through the first session of our Southern Humboldt girls cultural group, "Dishgharghirat," which means "you are loved" in the Wiyot language. So far the girls have been taught to play a women's gambling game, toured the museum at Bear River and learned to identify different basketry designs, painted canvas & just finished learning to bead pe**te stitch keychains.

Our DIshgharghirat girls group is collaborating with the Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria and the Wiyot Tribe. We will be returning on April 14th for a hike in Wiyot territory, followed by Wiyot Bingo & bear grass braiding on the April 21st, Ceremonial protocols and regalia share on April 28th and finishing up with a Maple bark gathering trip on May 5th.

We are unfortunately at capacity for transportation, but If you are interested in joining us for our next several groups, please see the flyer & scan the QR code to register & we will reach out to give information on the locations.

We would like to invite Native youth and service providers to participate in an upcoming Listening Session focused on the experiences of Native youth who have faced housing instability.

This session is open to Native youth ages 14 and older who have experienced being unhoused in any form, including couch surfing, living in unstable or frequently changing family environments, staying in hotels, or other temporary living situations.

We also invite Native service providers who have experience working with Native youth experiencing homelessness to attend and share their insights.

Event Details:

🕓 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM
📍 Azalea Hall, McKinleyville
🍽 Dinner will be provided

This listening session is hosted by the California Interagency Council on Homelessness in partnership with the Pala Band of Mission Indians and Two Feathers.

Participants will receive a $180 stipend for their time and participation, this applies to up to 35 participants. Youth will have priority in receiving the stipend.

On March 25, 2026, California leaders gathered in Sacramento to address a growing crisis facing boys and young men, including rising loneliness, declining workforce participation, and increasing mental health challenges. The convening focused on solutions that create connection, opportunity, and purpose for young men across our state.

Our Executive Director, Virgil Moorehead Jr., attended the event alongside Yurok Tribal Council Member Wes Crawford. Virgil spoke on a panel about the importance of uplifting Native boys and men through culturally-based programming and creating “mattering” experiences — opportunities for Native boys and men to feel seen, valued, connected, and purposeful within their communities.

We are grateful to have Native leadership at these tables, ensuring that our communities, our youth, and our ways of supporting wellness and belonging are part of the conversation and part of the solutions.
