I would like to give you my PERSONAL (not medical)- possible broken bone cascade.
1. If child has an injury and they have been crying for a significant amount of time- 45 minutes or more- AND DOC (direct orthopedic care) is open- go there.
2. Significant injury- crying for over an hour AND significant inflammation, child cannot be made comfortable for the night, and DOC is closed- ER. I avoid this as much as possible! I’d do all the arnica, aconite, hypericum, and yes ibuprofen to keep myself out of the ER. (Obviously for disfigurement or loss of perfusion- go straight to ER).
3. There’s an event, but you get child calmed down, and it’s a day or two later and you aren’t sure which way it will fall- get to Dr. Kishan. He is amazing. He is great with kids. He believes in nutrition. He is CONSERVATIVE in treatment. He believes in supplements. He’s not going to roll you through follow ups to feed a cattle drive for money. Ask to be a walk in. His staff will do it. He is worth the wait. But usually it’s not bad because he CARES about your wait!
4. There’s an event and you have an xray showing a break and are told to follow up with ortho- Dr. Kishan.
5. You go to DOC and it’s a pediatric case that is unusual or needs continual follow up or just a Pediatric weigh in for that case- Dr. Kishan.
When my son broke his heal year before last, we went to DOC and we had fantastic care as many of our clients have also relayed. His break did not show on first xray, they were certain it would show later, did appropriate care, and when the break showed the following week, we were sent to pedi ortho for safe care. (Because the heel is so hard to break, adults typically break their back as well!). I called Kishan’s office and they sent me right over to his office to be worked in. He said this is painful, keep him in the boot for X amount of time, the scooter he’s on is smart, if he’s not walking and running heel to toe normally in X weeks- bring him back. If he is- I don’t need to see him again. (He commented on Jason today like- see! He did fine huh!)
My daughter fell from a horse Saturday, I really didn’t think it was broken because she stayed up until 2am for her birthday party 😂. Xray showed a minor displaced spot on upper humerus Monday, so I called and asked for Wednesday (his day in mckinney) and was told to walk in. He looked at xray, had an amazing conversation with my daughter, and basically said- sling your mom bought for comfort, take it off when you want, no activities that could result in a fall but otherwise do all you want and complete your schoolwork and chores, I don’t need to see you about this ever again unless there’s some sort of problem or concern from your mom. You can ride your horses in 6 weeks from day of break. Sounds fun! It’s good for you! And he went on his way.
Hope this helps! My weird country girl saying is- when it comes to kids and dogs- I’m team wait unless something is obviously grossly wrong. 😉
