Babies get Bach! 👶🎶
A new study published in PLOS Biology has found that newborns’ brains can anticipate rhythmic patterns in music, even while they sleep.
Researchers at the Italian Institute of Technology played piano sonatas by J.S. Bach to 49 dozing newborns and recorded their brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG). They then played them scrambled versions of the same music. When the music’s rhythm was disrupted, the babies’ brains responded, but they showed no reaction to broken melodies.
The findings suggest rhythm is present at birth, while melody develops later through experience.
