What better way to celebrate Veterans Day with a rousing round of Corn Bag Toss? Vinson Hall residents gathered in our ballroom to participate in our single-elimination Corn Bag Toss Tournament, with 10 teams signing up to play. Clever names are part of the game here at Vinson Hall, and teams included The Corn Dawgs, Terrible Tossers, and Baggin’ & Braggin’. Congratulations to Pinewood Bros for taking home the win!

On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and passed legislation creating what would become the United States Navy. At Vinson Hall we celebrate our military roots and are proud of our residents and their families who faithfully served their county. It is because of these strong individuals that we enjoy the peace and prosperity we have today. We thank all our veterans for their service and we wish the U.S. Navy a very happy 250th birthday!

What’s better than eating ice cream in August? Eating ice cream for a good cause! Vinson Hall held its Scoop for a Smile ice cream fundraiser on Friday, August 15, in the Vinson Hall lobby. Offering such nostalgic ice cream treats as banana splits and root beer floats, as well as different flavors of ice cream with a variety of sauces, syrups and toppings, the ice cream party was a big hit with residents and helped raised funds for our 2025 campaign to support the Alzheimer’s Association!

We explored cognitive health at our monthly Wellness Lecture at Vinson Hall on June 1 Our Wellness Lectures are sponsored by our in-house homecare agency, Vinson Hall at Home, and are developed by our resident Health and Wellness Committee and staff at our Health & Wellness Center. Vinson Hall at Home provides refreshments and attends to answer questions and provide information on their services, which include home care as well as skilled home health care that is covered by Medicare. At our June lecture, we welcome to campus Sunday Health, a cognitive care clinic in Vienna, VA dedicated to helping older adults take a proactive approach to brain health. They discussed brain health, including the differences between normal aging and possible cognitive decline; lifestyle factors that influence cognitive health; diagnostic blood tests; and FDA-approved disease-modifying treatments. At Vinson Hall, we’re always learning new ways to take control of our health!

It was a full house in the Penthouse Lounge at our monthly birthday tea this June 10! Along with our celebration of birthdays and welcome to newcomers, a committee of residents led by Maureen Kammerer took the time to recognize the volunteers in our community who, as Maureen said, “add so much to our lives here.” The committee focused on recognizing individual volunteers and plan to honor larger groups within the community in the fall. We appreciate our volunteers, welcome our new residents, and wish a very Happy Birthday to our June birthdays!

At Vinson Hall, we’re always learning new ways to take control of our health! The first Tuesday of each month, VHRC hosts Wellness Lectures, which focus on topics like heart health, macular degeneration, and many others. These lectures, which are sponsored by our in-house homecare agency, Vinson Hall at Home, are developed by our resident Health and Wellness Committee and staff at our Health & Wellness Center who together determine relevant topics within the community. Vinson Hall at Home provides refreshments and attends to answer questions and provide information on their services, which include home care as well as skilled home health care, which is covered by Medicare. This May, Bonnie O’Leary, the Outreach Manager of the non-profit Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons, presented her program “Hearing Aids: Beware and Be Wise,” which covered everything from hearing loss and evaluation to different types and styles of hearing aids.

The Vinson Hall Players had another hit on June 13 and 14, and played their farce "Suite Surrender" to full houses at both shows. The play took us back in time to World War ll, when entertainers raised money by selling war bonds all over the country. The theatrical group formed in the fall of 2022 and they’ve been entertaining us ever since. Kudos to the Vinson Hall Players for another successful show!

The U.S. Army celebrates its 250th birthday today! On this same date in 1775, after ever-escalating tensions with Britain, the Continental Congress took a vote to create the Continental Army. Under what seemed like impossible odds, the resilience and courage of those in uniform secured our freedom in the Revolutionary War—values upheld in the Army today. At VHRC, we celebrate our military heritage and today we honor our Army veterans: Happy 250th birthday to the U.S. Army
