Kamala Yoga Studio

Kamala Yoga Studio Offering gentle yoga classes for all levels out of a cozy loft studio in McLean, Illinois. Hi! My name is Katie Funk, and I'm the owner of Kamala Yoga Studio.

I have been teaching hatha yoga since January 2012, following my teacher training at Sivananda Yoga Farm in Grass Valley, California, where I lived for 30 days and completed my 200-hour yoga teaching certification. I currently teach two classes a week: a gentle class on Tuesdays, 6:30-7:30 pm, and a beginner/intermediate yoga with flow class on Wednesdays, 6:15-7:30 pm. There are some weeks that I cannot have class due to my travel schedule. Please see posts for the most recent schedule updates. The classes are held in the studio above the garage at my home in McLean, IL. Class sizes are generally small, and the atmosphere is very friendly and warm. I ask students to please contact me by email, text, or the sign-up genius website to let me know they plan to attend class by 4 pm the day of class. The first class is free, then it is $7/class or $30 for 5 classes (these 5-class passes can be used for either/both classes, do not expire, and do not have to be used in consecutive weeks). Please feel free to contact me with questions!

Following surgery in January, I was taking a break from teaching yoga and have made the difficult decision to close my home studio. My husband and I are focusing our energy on our farm, hoping to grow it into a sustainable source of income for us. If all goes well, someday I'll be able to offer classes on the farm. In the meantime, sending lots of love and light out to all of you!

It's been much too long, and I've been missing seeing all of your beautiful faces and stretching, relaxing, chatting, and laughing with you all. I hope you all have been staying safe and warm throughout the winter months.

With restrictions lowered, vaccines rolling out, and virus rates going down, I've decided to reopen the studio with the same guidelines as last year. This means a limit of 5 per class, 6 ft between mats, and bringing your own mats and props. Also, for the time being, I'm planning on having Monday classes only.

Our first class will be tomorrow, March 1st—one spot still open!

It is with great sadness that I have decided to cancel classes starting this Wednesday and continuing until the new COVID mandate that goes into effect for our region tomorrow is lifted.

This mandate limits gatherings to 10 people or 25% capacity (whichever is less). The capacity of my studio is 12, so 25% would be 3—just me and 2 students.

As much as I would love to continue classes, it really seems that things are getting worse rather than better, and the last thing I would want would be to endanger any of you.

I'll leave the signup online, so feel free to continue to sign up for future dates. I'll keep you all posted and will happily let you know when we can safely stretch, relax, and decompress together again.

Take good care and please let me know if there is anything I can do for you in the meantime—yoga or meditation recommendations, or simply some friendship and support. ❤️🙏

For those of you who joined me for on-Farm classes—we finally finished that mulching! 🤗

We’re happy to say that we finally finished sheet-mulching the trees in the orchard, and also got a bed each planted of garlic and Egyptian walking onions.

A few updates!

I've decided to change class time to 5:30 pm for all classes moving forward.

Also, for the next two weeks only (9/28 to 10/7) classes will be held outside at our farm in Funks Grove if weather permits. For these dates I've added two different slots to the sign-up:
in-studio/on-farm OR on-farm only (due to the maximum limit of 5 in the studio).
You can sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0945afae23a1fe3-ongoing
-If you would be happy with either location, sign up for the in-studio/on-farm slot.
-If you only want to attend an on-farm class OR if the first slot is full, sign up for the on-farm slot.
-If you only want to attend in-studio, please sign up for the in-studio/on-farm slot and note this preference in your comment or contact me and let me know.

A final decision regarding location will be made the day before class, and all those who have signed up will be notified.

Hope to see you all soon!!

With the weather being so nice and to allow more people to attend class, I've decided to try having classes at the farm this week. Since the sun is setting earlier these days, I've also moved class time up to 5:30 pm.

I've increased our maximum class size to 12.
Please sign up as usual here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0945afae23a1fe3-ongoing

I'll email directions to all who sign up.

Please bring your own mat and props, as well as a large towel or blanket to put under your mat if you don't want to be directly in the grass.

If all goes well, I may continue to offer classes at the farm for a few weeks or as long as weather permits.

Hi friends!

I have decided to try having in-person classes again starting next Monday, August 3rd, with some new safety measures in place:

1. Maximum of 5 students.

2. Please bring your own mat and any other props (strap, blocks, blanket, bolster, etc) to avoid sharing equipment.

3. Please remove your shoes at the bottom of the stairs and bring as few other personal items as possible into the studio.

4. I will sign you in as you arrive.

5. Please wear a mask as you arrive and leave. You do not need to wear a mask once you are on your mat.

6. I will have places marked for you to place your mats to ensure distances of at least 6 feet between mats.

I am hopeful that this will be a very safe way for us to get together and enjoy some much needed relaxation and stress relief! It will be wonderful to see you all again!

Based on the recent lack of interest in virtual/recorded classes, I am planning on canceling my Zoom subscription and discontinuing that offering. HOWEVER, if I hear back from several of you that you are highly interested in and likely to utilize this option, please let me know, and I'd happily reconsider the decision.

Hope to *actually* see you all soon!

In last night's virtual gentle class, we began with a guided lake meditation that I adapted from one of my favorite yoga/meditation experts: Jon Kabat-Zinn. I recommended his books to my students in class, and I wanted to extend that recommendation to anyone needing some good resources for stress reduction in these difficult times. (Side note: one of my students pointed out that a lake meditation was perfect right now as most of us have lakes in our yards that we can easily call to mind!) 😅

Also, join me soon for a Zoom class! Virtual classes will be continuing through May and for as long as physical distancing remains advisable. Best part of these classes is that whether or not you attend live you also get a YouTube link to the class recording that you can access as many times as you want (or need!) the following week! Sign up online or PM for details! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0945afae23a1fe3-ongoing
