March Social Media Takeover: Expert of the Day Spotlight

We’re excited to feature Dr. Andrew Dauber, Chief of Endocrinology at Children’s National Hospital, in our upcoming “Day in the Life” takeover!

Drop your questions in the comments or send us a DM by February 24.

Selected questions will be answered in a follow-up video.
Please note: No PHI and no requests for personal medical advice.

By 5 p.m., I try to tie up loose ends, which can range from minutes to hours of work. Today, I wrapped up around 6 p.m. With no desire to cook, we picked up take‑out from a neighborhood Italian restaurant. We usually like to walk before or after dinner, but the cold weather has recently made that difficult. Not nearly enough exercise!

Nights without work are rare, and this one was no exception. Among other things, I spent part of the evening drafting the introduction to the January PES President’s letter. Still, I make room for some relaxation. We enjoy tennis, and the Australian Open had some excellent matches to watch. Before bed, I always read a few chapters from a novel. Mysteries are my go‑to for “light” reading, but I’m currently reading The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal, an award‑winning dystopian science‑fiction novel.

Tuesday afternoons are reserved for endocrine division meetings. We review diabetes charts and tech updates, hold a conference, and discuss endocrine cases as a team. Since this was the fourth week of the month, our conference was a journal club (photo 5). Our first‑year fellow, Dr. Sahira Iqbal, presented “Longitudinal Continuous Glucose Monitoring Study in Young Children with Presymptomatic Type 1 Diabetes Followed in the ENDIA At-Risk Cohort Study” (Haynes A et al., Diabetes Care 2025).

Most Tuesdays also include one of my monthly administrative meetings from 4-5 p.m. On fourth Tuesdays, I meet with the Unified Administrator for CHAM to go over divisional needs, operational updates, and finances.

Lunch is rarely a dedicated break. More often, it’s eaten while doing tasks or attending meetings. Today’s choice was pizza, which was made a bit healthier by opting for a veggie slice.

Today’s clinic included patients with short stature and congenital hypothyroidism. One of my neuro‑oncology patients couldn’t make it; their transportation didn’t arrive on time, a challenge many families in the inner city face.

This particular “day in the life” fell on a Tuesday, which is my weekly Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein (CHAM) clinic day. I like to arrive early to review charts and prepare so that I’m ready for the patients. Since my office is in the building next door, I can walk over once the first patient is being triaged.
