Tendon transfers are used to improve hand function when there is a loss of motor capabilities of the muscles of the hand and/or wrist. Appropriate rehabilitation after these surgical procedures is key to a successful recovery. This requires the treating therapist to understand the general principles of tendon transfers, the functional deficits being addressed, and the appropriate therapeutic techniques required for rehabilitation before and after surgery. This wound care webinar will cover crucial features of a thorough wound assessment which promotes common nomenclature for consistency across disciplines. Wound healing principles and wound bed preparation will also be highlighted to provide the background information and the “why” behind the “what” to guide treatment, including identifying and treating infection. An algorithmic approach to dressing selection will outline coverage options and selection of the many types of dressings that exist, all based on treatment principles and wound assessment findings. This presentation will outline the lymphatic system, lymphedema, and the considerations when treating an oncologic patient. The presentation will provide the attendees with an understanding of the importance of the lymphatic system and how it can be affected. The attendees will learn about the different types of lymphedema, signs/symptoms, and treatment. The attendees will also understand the affects of chemo, radiation, immunotherapy, and cancer on patients undergoing orthopedic therapies.

A pain-free stable wrist is requisite for prehension activities of the hand. Occupations, sports, and other recreational activities may result in a twisting or compression injury to the wrist, especially on the ulnar side. Early identification of soft tissue injuries is recommended to avoid delayed care that may contribute to chronic pain and decreased functional use of the hand and upper extremity. Physical therapy professionals need to understand the wrist examination and provocative maneuvers to identify these conditions that may lead to chronic wrist pain and disability if left untreated.
