Dr. Palmer chose the word, chiropractic, to describe the healing technique he discovered. It came from the Greek word; chiros; meaning "hand" and practos; meaning "practice or method". So chiropractic means "done by hand". After the first chiropractic college opened in 1905 in Davenport, Iowa, chiropractors were soon relieving men and women and children of many, many painful problems and conditions simply by restoring vertebrae to their proper alignment. Medical doctors didn't like the competition so they were having chiropractors put into jail for "practicing medicine without a license"; even though no medicine whatsoever was involved. Chiropractors receive basically the same education as medical doctors; the difference being primarily that medical doctors received more training in drugs and surgery and chiropractors received more training in adjusting the human spine and in nutrition.

The man considered the "father" of chiropractic was a man by the name of Dr. Daniel David Palmer. He had a successful practice in Davenport, Iowa in a 3 story building around 1895. He had an African-American janitor by the name of Harvey Lillard and Harvey was hard of hearing. He couldn't hear the horse drawn buggies going along the cobblestone streets nor could he hear a clock ticking. One day Dr. Palmer asked him how long he'd been hard of hearing. Harvey told him that years ago he had bent over to pick up something and he felt a pop in his upper back and that was when he lost his hearing. Dr. Palmer asked him to lie face down on a wooden bench. Dr. Palmer felt around on his upper back and he felt a muscle spasm that didn't feel like it should be there. He gently pushed on Harvey's back and it popped. Shortly after, Harvey could hear again! He decided to name his discovery chiropractic; chiro from the Greek word for "hand" and practos from the Greek word for "use" or "practice". Chiropractic means "done by hand". Dr. Palmer was going to keep his discovery to himself for selfish reasons, but his son, B. J. Palmer, persuaded him to teach it to others and be famous, working on his ego. The first chiropractic college was Palmer College of Chiropractic which is still going strong in Davenport, Iowa. Stay tuned to the next chapter of chiropractic in another week or two.

Different tissues in our body replaces itself at different rates. Our outer skin and our inner skin (mucous membranes) replace themselves about every 2-3 weeks. Our slowest growing tissue, bone, replaces itself about every 7 years. So theoretically we get a new body every 7 years. I related this fact to a patient, Beverly Wheeler, years ago and she asked the question: "Well why do we get older?" I told her I would do some research on what answer science had for that question. After several days of research on the internet I discovered that science had no answer. There's millions and millions of dollars spent on research trying to find the answer because if someone found the answer they would be very, very wealthy. But I know that no one will ever be able to stop the process of aging because it was mandated by our Creator in the beginning when sin entered the world because of Adam and Eve's disobedience to God. But we should still take care of ourselves so that we can enjoy as much as possible our years on this earth. A healthy lifestyle plus a healthy diet will increase our chances of enjoying a healthy, pain free life before we go to "meet our Maker".

"What do you want with all the rotten eggs?" the manager asks. "Are you going to see the new comedian at the theater tonight?"
