*Shoulder Pain*
Today's topic is shoulder pain related by the winging of the scapulae (shoulder blades).
What is scapular winging?
- Scapular winging is when there is weakness of the serratus anterior and scapular stabilizers. One way to find out if you have winging scapulae is to see if you can place your fingers underneath the scapulae. If you can't, you most likely do not have it; however, if you can, then chances are you do.
What causes the weakening of the serratus anterior?
- Weakening of the serratus anterior is usually associated with repetitive overhead throwing motions such as the movements in hitting a volleyball, throwing a baseball/softball, etc. This issue can also be caused by the way we sit, letting our shoulders round forward. Some symptoms associated with weakened serratus anterior is pain in the shoulder blades or even in the shoulder region itself.
Ways to fix this:
- The main cause of scapular winging is weakness of the serratus anterior. It helps pull the bottom of the right shoulder blade down towards your left back pocket and your left shoulder blade towards the right back pocket, thus putting the scapulae in neutral position. There are multiple exercises we can do to strengthen this muscle, but we are going to start with basic exercises and then we can progress later on down the road when these become easier.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EXERCISES:
- Serratus Punch: 1-2 sets of 20 repetitions 1-2x/day
*Use weight such dumbbell or even a soup can.
- Shoulder Scaption: 1-2 sets of 20 repetitions 1-2x/day
- Plank: 3 sets of 30 second holds 1x/day
*If planking on toes is too difficult, try performing movement on knees.

This week's topic is "Back Pain".

Back pain can be a complex issue, but seems like most of the time it is related to our daily habits. Body mechanics play a crucial role in our lives every day by the way we sit, stand, walk, etc.

Studies have shown that sitting can be just as harmful to our bodies than smoking. Sitting can become a poor habit to pick up which can weaken our hips, creating back pain as well as making it difficult to stand up or to get around.

We go from a sitting to standing exercise quite frequently such as getting out of bed, out of a chair, off of the couch, out of the car, and even after using the restroom. Being that this task is quite repetitive, we are going to focus on a basic sit-to-stand exercise while having proper technique.

- I would recommend beginning with 10-20 repetitions 1-2 times per day.
- If this exercise is too difficult, try placing a pillow on the chair so you don't have to squat down as far.
