Who doesn’t love stickers?!

For this activity you will need:
🗒️Paper taped to a vertical surface at child’s eye level
😊Stickers

To play:
💗Have your child stand facing the paper, with an adult sitting on the floor next to child
😊 Place a sticker on top of child’s foot
🧍‍♂️Have your child lift their foot and retrieve the sticker using their opposite hand

This activity addresses many developmental skills:
⚖️Balance: standing on one foot is important for stepping over obstacles and going up and down the stairs
🧠Crossing midline: Midline is an imaginary vertical line down the center of the body. This skill strengthens communication between both sides of the brain. Crossing midline is essential for everyday activities such as opening a door, getting dressed, turning pages of a book, taking a shower, and more.
🤝Bilateral coordination: Good coordination is needed for many fun childhood activities such as hitting a baseball, riding a bike, building with legos, stringing beads, coloring, kicking a ball, and running with friends.
🧍🏽‍♀️Body awareness: A child with poor body awareness often bumps into other children, trips and falls over obstacles, or has difficulty with imitation games (like Simon Says). This activity builds body awareness.

We’d love you to please share this post with friends so that they can try it too!

⭐ It’s time for another Justabout Shout-Out! ⭐

Our dinosaur loving friend has been working hard in occupational therapy with Miss Heather and we could not be more proud! 🦕🦖

🧩🖐🏼🖍️Through fun games and play, our friend is building his hand strength, using functional grasp patterns, and developing fine motor control to set him up for success in preschool and daily routines! 💚 Keep up the great work, we can’t wait to see how you continue to move, learn, and grow!

Are you trying to stay warm while waiting for spring to arrive? 🥶⏳🌈Try this fine motor play activity, using supplies from home to make your own hot cocoa! ☕

You will need:
☕ A mug - for little ones, use a plastic cup to prevent accidents!
📦 A piece of cardboard or thick paper
⭐ Q-tips

Set it up:
📦 Cut the cardboard or paper into a circle to fit the top of the mug
⭐ Poke small holes through the circle
☕ Tape the circle to the top of your mug
⭐ Cut the q-tips in half to make your marshmallows

How to play:
☕ Keep it simple - have your child simply put in and take out the marshmallows, using their “pinchers”
⭐ Add a dice - Roll a dice, add or remove the number of marshmallows shown on the dice
☕ Play cafe - Place an order for your mini barista, asking for a specific number of marshmallows in your order
⭐ Add a fine motor challenge - When taking out the marshmallows, can they wiggle the marshmallow from their fingers into their palm without dropping them? Can they pass the marshmallow between their hands without dropping them?

💗🖐🏼✨While your child is making their perfect cup of hot chocolate, they are building foundational fine motor and visual motor skills, including developing their pincer grasp and in-hand manipulation.

Crazy Catches is a great way to further challenge a child’s balance and coordination! ⚾️ Trying to keep your balance while playing catch also helps with trunk strengthening and body awareness. 🎈You can also switch the ball for a balloon and play it indoors on rainy spring days!

For this activity, you will need:
🏐 A beachball or any other ball that your child is comfortable with throwing/catching
💫 Imagination for poses (or use the list below!)

To play:
🎾 Throw and catch with a partner while in a variety of poses...anything but standing tall on 2 feet!
🔁 Take turns picking a position, then throw/catch for 5-10 repetitions without losing your balance before switching postures

Ideas for positions:
🦩Standing on one foot (flamingo or tree pose)
🌟Kneeling on 2 knees
😎Kneeling with one knee up
🤹🏻‍♀️Standing on a pretend tightrope
🐸Squatting like a frog
🐧Penguin (Stand on your heels only)
🦒Giraffe (Standing on tiptoes)
🤩Lunge with one foot forward

💡Did you know?💡Occupational therapists can help children develop skills to try new foods! 🍽️😋

Before starting OT with Miss Heather, our friend ate only 11 foods, making mealtime a challenge. When she graduated from OT, she could eat over 70 foods! We are so proud!

Signs your child may benefit from feeding therapy include:
🍎 Consistently eating less than 30 foods
🥕 Avoiding whole food groups (eating no veggies)
🍋Avoiding food textures (eating only crunchy foods)
🥑Gagging, choking, or coughing during mealtime
🍇Mealtime feeling like a battle

👀Hide and Seek!👀

Kids love playing hide and seek, but for kids still learning safety rules, let their toys do the hiding!🧸

For this activity, you will need:
🧩A toy with several pieces that go together (examples: board puzzle, shape sorter, animals and barn, Little People School Bus and people, Mr. Potato Head and his pieces, cars and a racetrack - the possibilities are endless!)
💛Painter’s tape

Set up:
🩵Designate a spot that the “seeker” will stand with eyes closed to count (a mark on the floor helps kids learn the skill of waiting)
💚Set your boundaries - Use a line of painter’s tape on the floor to mark where to stay while looking, such as the doorway to the room.
🩵Hide toys around the room. Be sure to count how many you hide so that you know when the game is over!

To Play:
⌛Show the seeker their waiting spot and tell them that their toys will hide and they can seek. How much help the child needs can vary. New learners may need you to stand next to them and hold hands while counting aloud or holding a visual timer. Other kids may be able to wait with eyes closed and count independently.
👀Then, find the toys and return them to their home!
➡️ Swipe to see more variations!

🪄The magic of this game: Has your child mastered this game, playing without your help? Set up the game before your child wakes up in the morning. Stay within earshot and enjoy your cup of coffee while they play! ☕Reward their independent play when they are done by getting down to their eye level and giving them your full attention to talk about the game and plans for the day. They will remember how proud they felt to play their game independently and how eager you were to talk to them afterward.🏅🧠Their brains form positive connections about completing a task on their own AND bonding with their adult. And they will want to do it again!

⭐Congratulations to Owen on his graduation from PT! 🎓 We are so proud of all of your accomplishments. ⭐

Owen’s energy and imagination really kept Ms. Becky on her toes (but you bet he is not on HIS toes!). 👣 Owen loved building “Floor is Lava” obstacle courses and playing games. 🌋🏃🏼‍♂️‍➡️

When he wasn’t building, jumping, or running, he was Ms. Becky’s best assistant. For a sticker salary, Owen was always ready to shred documents (not yet reading is a qualification), take confetti to the dumpster, get the mail, clean the mirrors, and swiffer the floors! 📜💌🚮🧹He takes pride in his ability to be a strong helper and will take those skills and confidence with him.

🌳☀️Ms. Becky enjoyed taking walks with Owen outdoors to work on motor skills and also meet friendly faces of our neighbors: a barber, an EMT, and an accountant! 💇🏼🧑🏼‍⚕️💰Owen learned the song, “Who are the people in our neighborhood?” and talked about how to be friendly but stay safe.

💚🩵Thanks for all of the fun in PT, Owen!🩵💚

Does your child love to color, but have a hard time staying in the lines? Check out this simple activity!

You will need:
🖍️ Crayons, colored pencils, or markers
🌈 Wikki-Stix
📄 Coloring page or paper

Set it up:
🌈 Help your child to bend the Wikki Stix along the lines of the coloring page - it’s okay if you don’t follow each detail!

How to play:
🖍️ Simply color in the picture!
⭐ The Wikki Stix provide a physical boundary, reminding your child to stay in the lines

While your child lets their creativity shine, they are developing boundary awareness, fine motor control, and hand strength! 👩🏼‍🎨 These skills are foundational for school readiness skills, such as writing letters to spell their name!

Does your child have difficulty with coloring, writing, or other fine motor skills? 💌 Contact us today to learn how occupational therapy can support your child. 📆 We have immediate openings for new patients!
