Does your child love playing with cars? 🛣️🚚 Here are a few ways to play with their favorite cars, while building important communication skills!

You will need:
🚗Toy cars - that’s it!

While playing, prompt your child to:
🚕 Label parts of the car & car actions
🚙 Follow directions during play
🚛 Sort the cars by characteristics
🛻 Practice taking turns
🚒 Problem solve car scenarios

Does your child have a hard time trying new foods? Try this activity, pairing their favorite game with snack time to explore new foods!

You will need:
🥦Snacks - pick a few new or challenging foods and a few foods your child likes
🃏A favorite game - choose a game that has colors as part of the game (Candyland, Pop the Pig, and UNO are great choices!)

To set it up:
🍽️ Prepare your snacks on the plate, marking which color of the game goes with each food
🃏 Set up the game

How to play:
🌟 Play the game, taking turns as usual
🌟 Based on the color of your turn, take a bite of the food that matches!
🌟 Is taking bites too challenging? Try touching the food to your cheek or licking the food

For example, if you are playing Pop the Pig:
🐷If you picked the green burger with a 3 on it, you would take 3 bites of green beans

Or, if you are playing Candyland:
🍭If you draw a card with 2 yellow squares, take 2 bites of pancakes!

Our friends at Justabout Pediatric Therapy have BIG goals for the new year! 🎉This week, we worked hard to brainstorm our New Year’s resolutions and displayed each colorful creation in our waiting room!

By learning about what each child wants to accomplish, we can make sure each session is both fun and meaningful, while promoting independence and function!

🪜A parent may want their child to safely walk up the stairs by themself!
🛝A child’s may want to go down the big slide on the playground with their friends!
💪🏼Then, our therapist’s goal is to build foundational trunk control, leg strength, and motor planning - promoting the child’s ability to walk up the stairs AND climb to the top of the slide!

Let’s play tunnel ball, where you get to be the tunnel! ⚽

You will need:
🧺 A laundry basket or container
⚽ Balls
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 A friend

To Set It Up:
🧺 Turn the basket or container on the side to be the goal

How to Play:
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Choose who will be the tunnel first
⭐ Get in position to be the tunnel - choose bear walk or crab walk!
👁️ While holding the tunnel pose, watch the ball while your friend rolls it under you - did they score? 
🔁 Switch spots and play again!

🏋🏼‍♀️👀While you are playing and having fun, you are building important skills! This activity targets visual tracking, a foundational skill for reading, as well as whole body strength and balance!

As Santa’s reindeer fly and roam,

Make your own holiday string lights!💡

You will need:
🖍️Dobber markers, marker, or crayons
📄A blank paper
🃏A deck of UNO cards

To Set It Up:
✨Draw a squiggly line to make your string lights, adding dots for each bulb
✨Remove the specialty cards from your UNO deck

How to Play:
🃏 Flip over the top UNO card
🌈Identify the number and color
💡Use the dobbers to add the specified color and number of lights to your paper
🔁Draw another card and repeat!

While your child is making their holiday craft, they are also building visual motor integration skills and number/color recognition!
