As the owner of At Home Rehab & Wellness, Thanksgiving is a season that reminds me why I do this work. Iโ€™m deeply thankful for the trust our patients place in us and for the privilege of walking alongside them through healing, recovery, and renewed independence.

As the weather cools, itโ€™s tempting to stay cozy on the couch โ€” but movement is medicine! ๐Ÿ’ช Reduced activity can lead to stiffness, muscle weakness, and decreased balance, which may increase fall risk. Thatโ€™s why even short bouts of exercise throughout the day are so important, especially for older adults or those recovering from injury.

Try these simple indoor moves:
๐Ÿ  March in place during TV commercials to boost circulation and leg strength
๐Ÿช‘ Stand up every 30โ€“60 minutes to maintain core activation and joint mobility
๐ŸŽฏ Stretch or do light balance exercises in a clear, safe area to improve stability and coordination
*Use a sturdy chair, kitchen sink, or walker for hand support, if needed, to be safe!

As summer approaches, there's no better time to get moving & embrace the benefits of physical activityโ€”especially when it comes to healthy aging. Whether you're enjoying a walk in the park, tending to your garden, or swimming with the grandkids, staying active supports strength, balance, flexibility, & mental well-being at any stage of life.

But how exactly does exercise help as we age? Regular movement, along with a healthy diet, can reduce the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, & arthritis. It improves energy levels, sleep quality, & even mood. Most importantly, it helps preserve independence by supporting everyday tasks like bathing, cooking, & safe mobility.

OTs are problem-solvers, educators, and advocates. They help improve fine motor skills, coordination, cognitive function, sensory integration, and emotional well-being. They design customized interventions that support independence and quality of life.
