Yesterday we had a very special event here at the funeral home. Our beloved Pat Hinton (Ms. Pat) was surprised with an 80th birthday party with all of her closest friends and family. Ms. Pat has been a vital part of the staff at Monaghan's for several years now and we just absolutely adore her here. Her special day isn't actually until Wednesday, but she will be at Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee celebrating her special day with the King. So we got her a few days early. Happy 80th birthday to our funeral home "Ma Maw"! We love you Ms. Pat!

John Burton Hines, Jr. - 75 years old and lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, with his lovely wife Midge. John is a former resident of Richmond, Virginia who was born on October 13th, 1949. He died peacefully, one month before his birthday on September 13th, 2025, with Midge by his side. This was the same day, 25 years ago, that his mother Trudy went home to be with the LORD. We found much comfort from GOD knowing this and had been praying for John’s complete total healing in body and spirit.

He is preceded in death by his loving parents, John and Gertrude Hines and his sweet older sister, Bonnie McNamara whose husband Ronnie, is still with us today. John is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 39 years, Midge Hines and his cute cats; Suvi, Castor, and Pollux. Also, his sweet sister, Sandra Grey, whose husband Ron (Santa) Grey recently went home to be with The LORD as well. John is affectionately called “Uncle Johnny” by his close nieces and nephews, Angie, Sarah, Jennifer, Elizabeth, Tommy, Shawn and Adam. Uncle Johnny was blessed with many other Great nieces, nephews and cousins in our family. John was a Veteran of the United States Army who courageously served in Vietnam. According to Aunt Midge, he felt that “his service was a point of quiet pride; just one more way he showed up for others.” John devoted his life to Midge and to counseling others struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. He understood their challenges having suffered himself and was able to overcome this in his own life as a young man. John was a graduate of

The University of Louisville in Kentucky with a Master’s Degree in Social Work. He was a Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervision Status in addition to being a Counselor for Chemical Dependency in Ohio. John and Midge also enjoyed scuba diving in the Caribbean; Grand Cayman Islands, Bonaire and San Salvador were just a few places they spent exploring underwater together in the deep blue sea! Their cats provided much comfort to John, especially as his health declined in recent months due to Alzheimer’s Disease which he handled with much grace and dignity. John and Midge also liked to exercise at the gym and took their physical health seriously. They had so much fun together as a couple!!

We will miss John’s beautiful bright blue eyes, his sense of humor and his calm reassuring voice. John’s cute smile and laughter, along with his wonderful caring advice, will also be missed by those who knew and loved him. John was a good friend as well to many!! We thank GOD for his life and for the time we had with John here. We know and feel Uncle Johnny’s Love for us. Our hope is that John knew just how much we loved him too! One day, we will see John again in Eternity. Please join us in the Robins Tea Room at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens for John’s Celebration of Life on Monday, November 3rd, 2025, from 1pm-4pm. The address is 1800 Lakeside Avenue Richmond, Va. 23228.

We look forward to seeing many family and friends.

Timothy Eugene Ryder, 65, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, passed away on October 27, 2025. He leaves behind his wife, Shelley; his children, Carolyne and Joseph (Brooke); his brother, David; and his sister, Lisa Jones (David). An Eagle Scout and avid outdoorsman, Tim spent countless happy hours camping and canoeing on Virginia’s rivers. He was also an exceptional woodworker—his creations grace his own home and those of many others. His family often joked that all they had to do was describe what they needed in the vaguest terms, and Tim would somehow build exactly what they had envisioned. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends, but we take comfort in knowing he is now at peace—happily canoeing on the rivers of heaven. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 4, from 4:00–6:00 PM at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Parkway, Mechanicsville, VA. 23111. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to feedmore.org.

BISHOP, Marsha Viola (Myers), 71 of Richmond, VA, went to be with the Lord (Yhwh) on Thursday, October 23, 2025. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jesenia Elizabeth Bishop; and her parents, Emory and Sarah (Male) Myers. She is survived by her beloved husband of 44 years, James Edward Bishop; her children, James Edward Bishop II, Jessica Sari Reed (Brian), Jonathan Allen Bishop (Adrianne), and foster daughter, Yolanda Scott; two grandchildren, Jonah Rey Bishop and Micah Morris Bishop; two brothers, Emory Myers and Trever Myers (Deborah); and numerous other relatives and friends. Marsha was born and raised in Zanesville, Ohio, where she was a member of Southland Mission Church. She graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work and later obtained a degree as a Paralegal as well. She was an active member of the Bowling Green Gospel Choir and Student Union. Over the years she wore many hats; serving as a social worker for the Department of Social Services for many years, Secretary of the National Association of Black Veterans, Advisor for Bowling Green State University Department of Student Development, for which she received an award, program head for a community center in Ohio, and as an avid Democratic Campaigner for several presidents, including Jimmy Carter and Barak Obama. She was also the first female and first woman of color to work for Ohio Power as a line director. However, her biggest impact was made through the sharing of her love and guidance as both a mother to her own biological children, and to dozens of foster children that she cared for over forty years as a foster mother. It was her valued effort in mending those broken hearts that earned her two awards as a Local Hometown Hero. She also trained others to become foster parents. Marsha was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and leader in her community. She greatly enjoyed singing in a gospel choir, as well as going to a movie every Friday night with friends and family. Other than her love for music and movies, Marsha sold Avon for many years and was a Grey’s Anatomy aficionado. She loved her family and the Lord with passion and vigor. Her servants’ heart was devoted to children and her community. She was a loving and courageous woman, and she will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her family will receive friends from 12 – 2 pm, on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Parkway, Mechanicsville, VA 23111, with a funeral service to immediately follow at 2 pm. Marsha will be laid to rest on November 8, 2025, at 2 pm, at Southland Mission Cemetery, Cutler, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Restore Therapeutic Foster Care, 9097 Atlee Station Rd Suite 220, Mechanicsville, VA 23116.
