January 21, 1944, a true “Coal Miner’s Daughter”, was born. Brenda M. Crew was born to Nora and Herman Crew in Beckley, West Virginia. Born in poverty, Life was hard on her and the family. Daily life consisted of beans and corn bread, mining coal in unbearable conditions, cooking and heating with a coal stove, fighting freezing temperatures, and knee deep snow. Brenda endured her difficult childhood only to be ingrained with a strong work ethic that she carried through life.
In hopes of building a better life for herself, Brenda married young to David W. Croy. She had three loving children, David Croy, Michele Mulkey, and Mark Croy. The family moved to Richmond, Virginia. Once again, Brenda found herself alone, but instead of going back to Beckley, Brenda dug her heels in and stayed in Richmond. Life once again was not easy, but she persevered, getting a job at Brothers 2 Restaurant and then at the front office of the Richmond Braves. Her dedication and hard work paid off as she landed a job with A.H. Robins pharmaceutical company. Brenda was promoted quickly and found herself in charge of the finance department. She spent several decades with A.H. Robins, retiring in the early 2000s. Brenda spent her retirement years doing many things like Bible studies, bus trips, plays and entertaining for the holidays. Unfortunately, her health would start failing right around 2020 and Brenda would be in a fight to regain her health. She fought the good fight, however, the Lord would call her home December 11th, 2025. Brenda leaves behind as forementioned three children, two wonderful grandchildren, Brianna Phelps and DJ Mulkey; sister-in-law, Gloria Crew; and niece, Sherri Hockenjos. Mom, we could never put into words the love and sacrifice you have put into our lives. We miss you every minute and look forward to that day when we will all be reunited.
The interment will be held Thursday, December 18th, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Signal Hill Memorial Park, 12360 Hanover Courthouse Rd, Hanover, VA 23069. A memorial service will be planned at a later date.

With great sadness and much love for a life well-lived, Edward "Ed" Massenburg Parker Lucas, of Mechanicsville, VA was called peacefully to heaven on December 14, 2025 with his family by his side. He fought valiantly against many medical issues and had more bounce-backs than a cat has lives.
Ed was born on June 17, 1937 to the late Woodard Parker Lucas and Earl Snidow Lucas, Sr. and was raised in Emporia, VA. Ed was the middle brother to Earl S. Lucas, Jr (wife, Lovie) and Jack W. Lucas. The three boys along with neighborhood friends enjoyed many backyard baseball and football games. "The Lucas Boys” all died within the last 19 months. Following Jack’s call to heaven in May 2024, Earl recently joined Jack on December 9, 2025, and Ed joined them five days later.
A proud graduate of Virginia Tech in Business Administration, Ed continued to be a proud Hokie and coached many games from his favorite chair. After college, he served his country in the Virginia Army National Guard in Emporia. In 1961, Ed moved to Richmond and after 41 years retired from the Virginia Employment Commission having worked in both the Tax and Financial Sections. To the employees in his office, he would say, “You can call me Ed; you can call me Mr. Lucas; but please do not call me Mr. Ed.” Of course, the staff roared in laughter, catching his reference to the TV show about a talking horse.
Although Ed enjoyed his professional life, his favorite jobs were as a husband and father. Ed married Barbara-Ann Kelly Lucas on August 5, 1967. They worked as a team in all that they did in their 58 years of marriage. With his quick wit, he was the comedic “straight man” to his wife’s fun-loving nature and humor. Family was most important to him. They were proud and loving parents to their children, Sean Lucas, Stacy Lucas Stephenson (Todd), as well as, Little Eddie and Patrick who by-passed time on earth and went straight to Heaven. In addition to their own children, they took others under their wings. Ed and Barbara were very involved parents, and he often volunteered as the finance person for many of Sean and Stacy’s activities. Camping was a family activity, traveling to many fun & historical places. Ed was the finder of all lost things in the family, a fixer of all things broken, and a creative and inventive problem solver for house projects. He also loved tending bar and grilling for family celebrations. In later years, Ed especially enjoyed grilling, watching sports on TV, and doing various house projects with his son-in-law Todd, who he embraced with open arms.
Ed and Barbara were one of the founding families of the Church of the Redeemer in May, 1976. Ed served in many capacities, as well as being President of the Pastoral Council in the formative years of Redeemer. He was a Eucharistic Minister for many years. He was very involved in Church of the Redeemer Council #11042 of the Knights of Columbus and the James Cardinal Gibbons Assembly 3066. Ed was faith-filled, diligent and had a strong sense of responsibility. He was a leader and an active participant in Church & the Mechanicsville community.
Ed was always the Virginia gentleman and known for a twinkle in his eye and a big smile. His dry sense of humor, quiet manner, kind words, and his ability to be level-headed were gifts that he brought to every situation. Ed was a good friend and had a large circle of friends that kept him very active in his retirement. Ed and Barbara enjoyed traveling with their fun-loving friends to many places near and far. Besides his immediate family, Ed is survived by the Lucas Family, nieces, nephews, cousins, the Church of the Redeemer Family, many close friends, and colleagues.

With great sadness and gratitude for a life well-lived, the family shares that Earl Snidow Lucas, Jr. was called home to God on December 9, 2025. He is survived by his wife, Edris Lovie Grizzard Lucas; children, Karen (Bernie) Mitscherlich and Kevin Lucas; grandchildren, Ryan (Katherine) Mitscherlich, Grace Mitscherlich, Zoe Lucas, and Kate Mitscherlich; brother, Edward (Barbara) Lucas; and many nieces and nephews. Loved by all, he had a good sense of humor and enjoyed sharing his talents and helping others whenever possible. Faith in and love for God was a cornerstone in his life, which he readily shared with others. He loved spending time with others, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed meeting people and hearing their stories, volunteering for Meals-on-Wheels, and through the Lions Club to help others. Earl was born April 15, 1936, to the late Clara Woodard Parker Lucas and Earl Snidow Lucas and is predeceased by his brother, Jack Woodard Lucas. He was a native of Emporia, Virginia, spending his early years in town, moving out to the family farm, and later moving back to town, living on Hicksford Avenue. He and his brothers enjoyed many backyard baseball and football games with other neighborhood boys and were huge fans of the minor league team, the Nationals, later named the Rebels, a minor league team for the Washington Senators that played in Emporia in the late 1940s and early 1950s. In high school, Earl carried newspapers and worked odd jobs, and was senior class president, graduating from Greensville County High School in 1954. Earl was a man of many talents and interests, an inventor, engineer, artist, and avid reader. He loved airplanes, enjoyed playing golf, and enjoyed setting up model trains with his children, passing on something he enjoyed as a child with his brothers. After high school, he went to Virginia Tech and was part of the Corps of Cadets, graduating in 1959 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He held a Professional Engineer license for many years and holds a number of patents relating to plastics and packaging that are in common use today. Worked for many years as the Plant Engineer for Reynolds Metals Company at their Grottoes, Virginia plant, ending his professional career at their Bellwood location as a Marketing Director in New Product Development. Earl was a member of the Army National Guard from 1959 to 1965, and also held a Real Estate license in Virginia for many years. Having known each other since before elementary school, Earl and Lovie married in 1959. They lived in a number of places - Shelbyville, IN, Covington, VA, Lexington, NC, Waynesboro, VA, and ending up in the Richmond area. Earl also spent some extended time in the Outer Banks with his son over the years. A dog-lover throughout his life, he had many dogs - Tashi, Teddy, Buckwheat, Tom, Ben, Dixie, and others. To celebrate his life, a visitation will be held at Monaghan Funeral Home in Mechanicsville, VA, on Monday, December 15, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, with his memorial service beginning at 2:00 pm. He will be laid to rest at a later date, tentatively at the Emporia Cemetery in Emporia, Virginia.

This one might be a little bit of a long post but hopefully, the message will be worth the read. As most of us have joined the full swing of the Christmas season, one thing that all of us here at the funeral home understand, is that this time of year isn't always "merry" for some. Especially if it's the first holiday season without someone very special to you. At this year's Monaghan family Christmas gathering, a very thoughtful family member gave out beautiful little red cardinal ornaments for all of the family Christmas trees. For those who don't know, Mrs. Marion Monaghan, the matriarch of our family, passed away in 2011. She absolutely loved red cardinals. After 3 generations in funeral service, our family is also very well aware of the meaning behind seeing a red cardinal in the grieving process. So in following the Monaghan spirit of sharing and service, we decided there was no better way to honor Mrs. Monaghan than to share her and her red cardinal, with everyone. So this year, we have added that red cardinal to the Christmas tree at the funeral home. Not only will it help us feel like Marion is still here watching over her family but hopefully it can be a reminder that even though we've all lost someone, they're never really far away. Whether they left our site many years ago or just a day ago, they're always here with us, watching over all of our lives. From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank everyone that has supported us and that entrusted us with taking care of your loved ones in 2025. We are very humbled by the community support and send out prayers for everyone to have a fantastic 2026 ❤️
