Hydration is one of the most overlooked parts of recovery.
Yet it directly affects digestion, healing, circulation, and how your body clears medications and inflammation after surgery.
Pain medications, anesthesia, and reduced movement can all slow digestion and contribute to constipation. Adequate fluid intake helps keep stool soft, supports gut motility, and reduces discomfort during recovery.
Water also plays a key role in wound healing. Proper hydration supports blood flow, oxygen delivery to tissues, and the transport of nutrients needed for repair. Dehydration can slow healing and increase fatigue.
Hydration supports kidney function and helps your body process medications more efficiently, which is especially important post-surgery.
Recovery is physically demanding. Even mild dehydration can worsen fatigue, dizziness, headaches, and weakness, making it harder to move, breathe deeply, and heal well.
Hydration isnât just about thirst.
Itâs a foundational part of recovery.
Save this if youâre preparing for surgery or supporting someone through healing.
