💕 Happy Valentine’s Day! Love is in the air, and today we're sharing another resident love story—one that began with a yellow scarf, a bold first impression, and an unexpected conversation.

Meet Gary and Meryl.

“One summer in the mid-1970s, I volunteered for a political campaign in Honolulu, helping at a fundraiser by greeting guests and collecting information at the door. As the event was wrapping up, a woman walked up wearing a yellow scarf, bright red lipstick, and more rings than I could count. When I asked for her information, she looked at me and said, ‘I don’t need to fill out one of those.’ I was stunned—and, to be honest, a little annoyed.

A short while later, she came back out and asked, ‘Don’t I know you from somewhere?’ Without missing a beat, I replied, ‘Yes—you do. I’m the man of your dreams.’ She shot back, ‘More like the man of my nightmares,’ and walked away. The next day, I returned to the campaign office—and there she was again, this time sitting at a desk. Turns out she was the newly hired volunteer coordinator… and my boss. That boss is still Meryl today—47 years later—as my wife, best friend, and the mother of our two children.”

💕 Love is in the air at Rogue Valley Manor!

This Valentine’s Day, residents were invited to share their love stories—from unforgettable beginnings to the moments that stayed with them forever. Today’s begins with sunshine, surf, and a moment straight out of a movie.🎬

“It was June 23, 1977, when I was selected to be a surfing stunt double for Cheryl Ladd in a Charlie’s Angels segment filmed at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki. Security for the set was provided by the Honolulu Police Department (HPD), and that’s where I met the love of my life, HPD Sergeant Timothy ‘Timmy’ Wong. After finishing a surfing scene, I realized I’d forgotten my sandals and was standing on sand that was hot, hot, hot. Timmy offered to carry me across to the trailer. and I happily accepted.

Later that day, during lunch on the great lawn, Timmy suggested we sit together. We quickly discovered we were both born and raised in the islands and even had birthdays just two days apart. That afternoon marked the beginning of a love that lasted over 42 years."

🎁 Creativity and compassion are shining bright at Rogue Valley Manor this holiday season! Our fellow PieceMakers—a talented, resident-led group of quilters and knitters—put together 201 gift bags for Toys for Tots, each filled with a handmade quilt or blanket, a cuddly stuffed animal, and a children’s book. Made with donated supplies and lots of love, these gifts are sure to bring big smiles to the local children who receive them!
