This study marks a breakthrough in acupuncture research because it used a double blind trial design. Neither participants nor researchers knew who was receiving treatment or placebo. While those who received the placebo also experienced pain reduction, the pain relief lasted longer for those who received acupuncture.
This study is also important as showing promise as an effective treatment for vulvodynia. Vulvodynia is a chronic pain condition of the v***a and genitalia affecting as many as 10% of females. It is woefully understudied, and the results of this study were very positive.
You can read the research article in the Journal of Pain, and an article with commentary from University of Chicago College of Nursing entitled “Study finds acupuncture produces longer-lasting pain relief than placebo.”
