“New in 2017 - 2018”

Hepatitis “C” Screening (HCV): New medical developments in the fight against HCV infection have now made it possible for this previously untreatable virus to be alleviated. As such, we are one of the first organizations in the country to offer nationwide HCV screening via a CLIA-waived & FDA approved rapid HCV test. This test detects the presence of HCV anti-bodies and is 98% accurate. A finger-stick of whole blood is all that is needed to receive an accurate onsite test result.

December 1, 2016
Health Watch is pleased to announce their recent selection & participation in the country’s first nationwide Hepatitis “C” (HCV) Screening Campaign beginning in early 2017.
Working in concert with the Chronic Liver Disease Foundation – (CLDF), Health Watch medical professionals will play a systematic “boots on the ground” role in the onsite delivery of free Hepatitis C (HCV) Screenings & Education to high risk individuals throughout the country.
This, first of a kind, National HCV Screening Campaign will launch its preliminary efforts at Addiction Recovery Centers throughout country and advance to other high risk populations as they are identified.

Screenings will begin with testing for HCV antibody and will be performed onsite via a finger-stick sample of whole blood. Confidential results will be made available with 6-8 minutes of the testing procedure. Positive HCV antibody test results will be confirmed via venous blood draw sent to a certified reference lab. Patients who are confirmed as HCV positive will be referred to their healthcare provider for follow up and intervention.

As with all Health Watch screening programs, participation is always voluntary, extremely confidential, and completely HIPPA compliant.

Health Watch has served as a National Health Screening Provider since 1987.
Raising awareness to preventable or treatable disease, is one of Health Watch’s primary wellness missions.

Interesting Blood Pressure Test Facts
Many of us assume our Blood Pressure is being taken correctly, when in fact mistake may be taking place. Whether you are testing yourself at home or you are being tested at your doctor’s office, make sure it is taken correctly.
 Check your medication. Inform your physician of all the medications you are currently taking. Some medications that may increase your blood pressure are, but not limited to, the steroid prednisone and over the counter decongestants.
 Go to the bathroom. If your bladder is full it can raise your systolic number as much as 15 points and your diastolic number 10 points (top number/bottom number).

 Sit properly. Sit in a chair with your back straight and supported, feet flat on the floor, and your arm should be resting on a flat surface (ex. a table)

 Measure twice. We all get nervous at the doctors. If your blood pressure is reading high, ask your doctor or nurse to take it again at the end of your visit. More often than not, the lower reading is more accurate.

 Do not talk. Speaking during the test can raise your blood pressure upwards of 10 points on the top or the bottom.

 Check the cuff. Sometimes if the measurement is taken over your clothes or the cuff is too small it may increase your blood pressure as much as 50 points.

5 Steps to Lose Weight

The American Heart Association recommends these 5 steps to lose weight. A successful weight loss plan incorporates health eating and physical activity. Striking a balance between these two may help you lose weight more easily and keep it off.
Here are the 5 steps:
1. Set realistic goals. Set up realistic short term goals that are attainable, for example,” I will make lifestyle changes which will help me lose (and keep off) 3-5% of my body weight.” Short term goals keep you on track and headed toward your long term goals. A difficult goal is much harder to achieve and often times leads to self-judgement.
2. Understand how much and why you eat. Use a food diary or a tracking app to get an understanding of what, when, and how much you are eating. Understanding your eating habits and being aware of common road blocks and excuses helps you to set realistic goals.

3. Manage portion size. It is important to learn the difference between a serving and a portion. Smaller portions can help prevent over eating, which is easy to do if you are served too much food.

4. Make smart substitutions to reduce sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar. Foods high in saturated fat, trans fat, and sugar are usually high in calories too. Discover and learn to choose health snacks such as fruit, vegetable, and whole grains that will keep you fuller longer.

5. Balance what you eat with physical activity. We can all agree it is easier to take in calories than it is to burn them. Health eating and physical activity are essential components to losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight. Physical activity is defined as any activity that gets your heart rate up.
