"No" isn't just a word—it's a full-body experience.

When someone asks something of you, notice:
- Does your chest tighten?
- Does your stomach drop?
- Do your shoulders tense?

That's your body saying "no" before your mind can rationalize saying "yes."

Practice this:

Next time someone asks something of you, pause. Feel your body's response. Then say: "Let me check my schedule and get back to you."

This gives you space to honor what your body is telling you.

Burnout happens when we override our body's "no" over and over. Somatic boundaries mean listening to your body FIRST.

But you've been too busy listening to your mind.

Somatic awareness means learning to hear what your body is saying:
- That tightness in your chest? Your body saying "slow down"
- That heaviness in your legs? Your body saying "rest"
- That flutter in your stomach? Your body saying "this doesn't feel right"

The problem: We're taught to override our body's signals. Push through. Ignore discomfort. Keep going.

Rest = doing nothing (sleeping, lying down)
Recovery = actively helping your body return to balance

You can rest all weekend and still feel exhausted Monday morning if your nervous system hasn't actually recovered.

Real recovery looks like:
- Gentle movement (stretching, walking, yoga)
- Breathwork that shifts your nervous system state
- Somatic practices that release held tension
- Time in nature or with loved ones
- Activities that bring you joy and presence

The difference? Rest is passive. Recovery is active healing.

If you're burned out, your body isn't broken—it's protecting you.

Burnout is your nervous system's emergency brake. You've been in survival mode (fight-or-flight) for so long that your body has shifted into shutdown (freeze) to force you to stop.

Signs you're in nervous system shutdown:
- Exhausted no matter how much you sleep
- Numb or disconnected from yourself
- Can't access motivation or passion
- Everything feels overwhelming

What your body needs: Not more productivity hacks. Not more willpower.

Your nervous system needs to feel SAFE enough to come back online.

Start here: 10 minutes of restorative rest daily. Lie down, hand on heart, hand on belly, breathe slowly. No phone. No doing. Just being.

This isn't lazy. This is healing. đź’š

Most people breathe backwards when they're stressed.

When anxious, we tend to take quick, shallow breaths—mostly inhaling, barely exhaling. This keeps your nervous system activated.

The fix is simple:

Make your exhale LONGER than your inhale.

Try this:
- Inhale for 4 counts
- Exhale for 6-8 counts
- Repeat 5-10 times

Why this works: Long exhales activate your parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest mode). Your body literally cannot stay in fight-or-flight when you're exhaling slowly.

It's not about breathing MORE. It's about breathing OUT more. 🌬️

When I was diagnosed in my late twenties with orthostatic hypotension and an autonomic dysfunction, I had no idea that almost 30 years later it would all make sense when the EDS diagnosis was presented. Learning not to stand up too quickly and eat a little more salt was a pretty quick and easy medication-free modification. It definitely helped me reduce the instances. These are interesting findings and hope there are more studies to come!

Nearly every person in a study with hEDS had reduced blood flow in the brain when standing, which was linked with orthostatic intolerance.
