🤗🌟Fun Fact Friday!🤗🌟
In honor of Physical Therapy Month we wanted to share some fun facts about our favorite PT!🤩 Mrs. Chelsey Howell is our Physical Therapist at GTS Melbourne Schools! Her favorite hobbies include spending time with her family and jewelry making! She loves the color turquoise and won’t turn down a Cave City Watermelon! She never fails to go above and beyond for our Bearkat students! They adore her and so do we! Thank you Mrs. Chelsey for all that you do for our therapy team and our students! You are the best!🫶🏻🩵

What is W-Sitting???
▪️When sitting on the ground, the child’s bottom, knees, and feet are touching the ground, with the feet resting outside of the knees

Why do kids W-Sit?

Occupational Therapists/Therapy Assistants can improve handwriting skills by addressing a myriad of underlying deficits in skill areas including:
✏️ Fine Motor Weakness
✏️ Grasping Pattern
✏️ Fine Motor Precision
✏️ Visual Perception
✏️ Sensory Processing
✏️ Executive Functioning
✏️ Sustained Attention and Focus
Members of the Occupational Therapy team utilize a variety of handwriting activities/games/exercises to help students improve or develop the fundamental skills needed to be successful when it comes to handwriting! For example, Occupational Therapists can introduce strengthening activities involving the manipulation of play dough/theraputty to improve hand strength which is needed to efficiently grasp and control a writing utensil! Occupational Therapists can also provide adaptive techniques or adaptive writing tools to support students struggling with handwriting! For example, Occupational Therapists can teach students to use specialized pencil grips that will facilitate proper finger placement/grasp pattern for improved pencil control!
