Life can be highly stressful, and it’s important to implement healthy coping strategies to buffer the adverse effects of stress. Diaphragmatic Breathing, or Belly Breathing, is a simple way to re-center ourselves and reduce anxiety. In fact, studies show that Belly Breathing can improve attention, mood, and cortisol levels in adults (Ma et al., 2017). Follow the guide of the visual diagram below to learn the Bellying Breathing technique:

If you or someone you know is struggling to manage their anxiety, there are resources available that can help improve your ability to cope with life stressors. Do you ever notice that little voice in your head? This inner voice is our self-talk, and it helps us interpret and process our daily experiences. Self-talk influences our emotions and behaviors, which can impact our mental health. Self-talk can be both positive and negative. While positive self-talk can help motivate us and instill confidence, negative self-talk can be dangerous. When we speak negatively to ourselves, we tend to focus on specific factors which often do not reflect reality. Negative self-talk has a significant effect on our self-image and emotional well-being. It is important to stay aware of how we speak to ourselves and be kind to ourselves. While it may be difficult, we can change our internal dialogue. If you are experiencing difficulties regulating your self-talk, there are resources available that can help improve your positive self-talk and daily living. Contact Community Psychological Services at Florida Tech to make an appointment. To schedule, visit https://www.fit.edu/community-psychological-services/ and complete our Prospective Client Form, or call us at 321-309-3709.

It is essential to understand our bodies, and that means all parts, including our emotions. This is a confusing and challenging time; therefore, you may be experiencing many different feelings. Emotional Intelligence is the process of understanding, using, perceiving, and managing your emotions. There may be times when we feel overwhelmed and allow our emotions to control our decisions and actions or the opposite and keep them bottled up. Emotions are not always defined by one thing and may have layers. Have you ever felt so angry you cried? Or maybe so sad you felt angry? Therapy can help you identify these moments and the underlying layers within your emotions. All emotions, whether negative or positive, have a purpose and deserve to be validated. Humans are complex, and so are their feelings. We protect our physical health by wearing masks, taking vitamins, and monitoring our bodies. We preserve our mental health by finding ways to better understand and manage our emotions and how we use them to relate to others.

“When embraced and accepted, negative emotions can be a powerful catalyst to positive change in one’s life and can lead to a deeper feeling of meaning and authenticity.” – Dr. Paul TP Wong

If you struggle to understand, manage, or express your emotions, or you simply want to learn how to better use them to improve your wellbeing, please reach out to Community Psychological Services (CPS) at Florida Institute of Technology. What is Meditation? Meditation is a technique where a person uses concentration, mindfulness, or attending to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.

How can it help? Meditation has positive psychological, neurological, and cardiovascular effects. It can significantly reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.

Learning to meditate is like learning any other skill. It takes practice to get comfortable and it can be easier if someone guides you. Guided meditation can be a great place to start. You can’t do it wrong! Meditation is not about emptying your mind, achieving nirvana, or escaping pain. It’s a practice that helps you to be with yourself and the world without fear.

Community Psychological Services (CPS) at Florida Tech can offer meditation techniques for those who are experiencing a variety of mental health concerns. The individual psychotherapy our skilled student clinicians provide is supervised by licensed psychologists. To schedule an appointment, visit https://www.fit.edu/community-psychological-services/ and complete our Prospective Client Form, or call us at 321-309-3709.

It’s difficult to feel like you’re drowning, like no one is listening to your cry for help. Life can be overwhelming, anxiety-provoking, or even disheartening at times. When you’re feeling this way and other avenues like talking to friends/family or reading self-help books don’t work, reaching out for professional help is ok. It’s always better to get help before falling apart completely. Taking initiative to find help when you’re faced with strong feelings or life events that are challenging, means you care enough about yourself to find a resource to help yourself get back on your feet and take on the next day. It takes a lot of courage and self-acceptance to reach out and agree to being vulnerable enough to disclose personal difficulty. This courage should be met with a compassionate and warm response to help you succeed at overcoming the obstacles in your life to be a better version of yourself.

Reach out to Community Psychological Services (CPS) at Florida Tech for help. Doctoral students under the supervision of licensed psychologists offer in-person services. We provide a service to anyone experiencing a variety of mental health concerns. To schedule an appointment, visit https://www.fit.edu/community-psychological-services/ and complete our Prospective Client Form, or call us at 321-309-3709.

Everyone experiences stressors in their day to day lives, and it is normal to experience disappointments, setbacks, and failures. Therefore, it is important to have effective ways to bounce back from the obstacles that we all face. Particularly during this unprecedented time, having effective coping skills can help to reduce stress, adapt to change, and promote mental health and wellness.

What are coping skills? Coping skills are tools and techniques you can use to help handle negative emotions, stress, and establish a sense of internal balance. Coping skills can be either problem- focused or emotion-focused. Problem-focused coping skills involve finding methods to work through a problem and reduce stress. Examples of these could be working on managing your busy schedule or asking for support when in need of help. Emotion-focused coping can help you to handle the negative emotions that are caused by a problem or stressful situation. Emotion-focused coping skills can include physical exercise, doing an activity you enjoy, or simply taking a few deep breaths to relax.

If you are experiencing stress and are in need of finding healthy coping strategies that work for you, please contact Community Psychological Services (CPS) at Florida Tech. We offer individual psychotherapy by skilled student clinicians who are supervised by licensed psychologists. To schedule an appointment, visit https://www.fit.edu/community-psychological-services/ and complete our Prospective Client Form, or call us at 321-309-3709.

What is self-talk? Self-talk is the running internal dialogue we have throughout our waking hours. It is the little voice inside our heads that has the power to influence the ways in which we feel and behave. Self-talk can be positive and negative. Positive self-talk can assist us in building our self-confidence and makes day-to-day living better. On the other hand, people may find themselves struggling with negative self-talk, which beats us down and creates difficulties with the ways we view ourselves. The way we talk to ourselves is essential because it has the ability to empower us or even to defeat us, all depending on whether we conversate with ourselves in a positive or negative way. When we start telling ourselves “I can’t do this,” we start believing it. Positive self-talk is a tool people can learn to increase self-confidence and deflect from negative emotions. By reframing our negative thoughts into positive ones, we have the ability to improve our mental well-being.

Why is positive self-talk important? Reframing our negative thoughts to alternative, more manageable positive thoughts has shown to improve life satisfaction, improve immune system functioning, and decrease levels of distress experienced.

What can you do acquire positive self-talk skills? For individuals who experience difficulties in regulating self-talk, there are resources available to acquire the necessary tools to improve day-to-day living. We invite you to contact Community Psychological Services (CPS) at Florida Tech. CPS offers therapy services by our skilled student clinicians who are under the supervision of licensed psychologists. Many people have heard of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and know that it is a mental health condition that can follow a traumatic event. However, what a lot of people may not know is that you can develop PTSD from either experiencing an event OR witnessing it. Unfortunately, going through a traumatic event, such as experiencing abuse, a natural disaster or being in a car accident, is not all that uncommon. Most people who go through something scary like this have trouble adjusting back to their normal lives for some time. They may find it really difficult to get back behind the wheel or have thoughts they can’t control about what happened. After some time, caring for themselves and adjusting, most people usually get better. However, if this lasts for months after the traumatic event, they may develop PTSD.

If you find yourself uncontrollably thinking about something that has happened to you, avoiding certain reminders of the event, feeling like you’re always on edge, or just overwhelmed by feelings about what happened, Community Psychological Services at Florida Tech can help you work through it. Call 321-309-3709 to schedule your appointment today.
