Many people have heard of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and know that it is a mental health condition that can follow a traumatic event. However, what a lot of people may not know is that you can develop PTSD from either experiencing an event OR witnessing it. Unfortunately, going through a traumatic event, such as experiencing abuse, a natural disaster or being in a car accident, is not all that uncommon. Most people who go through something scary like this have trouble adjusting back to their normal lives for some time. They may find it really difficult to get back behind the wheel or have thoughts they can’t control about what happened. After some time, caring for themselves and adjusting, most people usually get better. However, if this lasts for months after the traumatic event, they may develop PTSD.
If you find yourself uncontrollably thinking about something that has happened to you, avoiding certain reminders of the event, feeling like you’re always on edge, or just overwhelmed by feelings about what happened, Community Psychological Services at Florida Tech can help you work through it. Call 321-309-3709 to schedule your appointment today.
