In the early 2000s, 2 studies claimed there were major risks associated with HRT, including breast cancer, stroke, and heart disease. These studies caused widespread fear and confusion, leading millions of women and providers to abandon HRT almost overnight.
But here’s what those headlines didn’t tell you:
- The women studied were, on average, well past menopause (often in their 60s or 70s).
- They were given synthetic hormones — specifically, conjugated equine estrogens (from horse urine) and synthetic progestins, which are not the same as bioidentical hormones used today.
Over the last two decades, new research has painted a completely different picture:
✅ When started within 10 years of menopause (or before age 60), HRT supports cardiovascular health and reduces the risk of cognitive decline.
✅ Bioidentical hormones — which are chemically identical to the ones your body naturally makes — are better tolerated and carry far fewer risks.
✅ HRT prevents osteoporosis and fractures, improves sleep and mood, restores skin elasticity and metabolism, and enhances libido and vaginal health — benefits no other therapy can match.
So why is the FDA’s move so monumental? Because it acknowledges what women’s health experts have known for years: The old warning was based on outdated science and synthetic hormones, not the individualized, evidence-based treatments we use today.
This change gives women the confidence to have open, informed conversations about their hormone health — without unnecessary fear.
