Good morning everyone. The situation that played out yesterday at Allen Outlets was horrific and senseless. No one should have to fear going to places.
I do not have an answer for the why this happened. All I can do is offer some tips to help you and your family.
1) The news will be reporting on this. There will be videos and pictures of the scene. Please know that you do not need to see those. This can be traumatic to view. Once you see something, you cannot unsee it. Also, please do not constantly watch the news. Watching to stay updated is fine but what can increase anxiety is watching it a long time.
2) Kids will find out about this and ask questions. They will know someone that was there or that was one of the victims. It is okay to tell them you don’t know why anyone would do that. Validate their feelings. They will be looking for cues of safety from you. Remind them of who and what keeps them safe. This may also help remind you of the same things.
Parent often ask what they should look for when a tragedy happens. Look at their behaviors. Is your child having more anxious behaviors? Are they acting out? Are they vocalizing their fear? What about their sleep? Pay attention to them. Ask them how they are feeling and give them a safe space to feel them.
3) If you or a loved one was there, you are going to experience a lot of emotions. Please allow yourself to do so. These feelings are important to feel and should not be stuffed away. There is no time table for how long you should feel things. Please get support either through family and friends, work, school, your place of worship, or through a therapist.
4) This shooting hits home as it happened in our backyard so to speak. Even if you were not there, it is scary. Please reach out and talk to a therapist. Specifically a therapist that has training in trauma.
