In honor of World Kidney Day, March 12th, here are some fun kidney facts.

• Dialysis is older than sliced bread. The first patient dialyzed was in the summer of 1924 and commercially sliced loaves didn’t hit the shelves until 1928.

• The title of the longest patient on dialysis goes to Jean-Pierre Gravel, who was on dialysis from October 1969 to October 2016. He holds the Guinness World Record at 47 years and 363 days!

• The largest kidney to date was 33 pounds with an additional 11 pounds of fluid. The patient had polycystic kidney disease and had to have both
of his kidneys removed in July of 2021. Together they weighed 77 pounds.
