Dental fillings are super common - they are completed in the hundreds of millions annually in the US, so many people have them.

The materials used in dental fillings today look much nicer than the old metal fillings, and when placed properly will support your teeth and protect them from further decay.

These fillings are bonded to the surface of your teeth with a special adhesive that is very strong under normal conditions. However, teeth grinding forces far exceed normal conditions, and put excessive strain on the bond between the tooth and the filling.

Making this even worse - the material used in the fillings flexes and moves differently than the natural tooth structure when put under the strain that comes from grinding, which stresses the bond out even more.

When the bond is damaged, teeth are more susceptible to further decay and even fracturing parts of the tooth off.

We get asked sometimes about the best way to mix the putty that comes in our teeth impression kits (included free with every order).

The clock starts ticking as soon as you start mixing, so it’s important to work quickly but also mix thoroughly. The best way to do this is by using the tips of your fingers to blend the material until no white streaks remain - and to get it done within 45 seconds.

So have fun - but don't get too wrapped up in your arts and crafts time to compromise your at-home impressions. And feel confident! Most of our customers get outstanding impressions on the first try. If you need a redo - no problem. We include extra supplies in every kit, and if you need more we’ll send some right out to you.

What’s “blockout resin” and why do you care?

We add this to the surface of models when we are making teeth whitening trays. When the tray is formed over the model, the blockout resin creates a reservoir for the whitening gel.
