Kindred Place Now Accepting TennCare to Expand Access to Mental Health Care

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Kindred Place, a trusted nonprofit counseling and education center located at 2180 Union Avenue, is proud to announce that it is now accepting TennCare, Tennessee’s Medicaid program. This expansion of coverage marks a major step forward in the organization’s mission to make high-quality mental health services accessible to all families, regardless of income or insurance status.

Kindred Place, which is now managed by the SchoolSeed Foundation, continues its long-standing mission of helping families heal and thrive. SchoolSeed, known for its leadership in managing community-based programs that strengthen children and families, assumed management of Kindred Place in 2024 to ensure that its vital counseling and education services continue to serve the Memphis community for generations to come.

For decades, Kindred Place has provided a safe and supportive environment for individuals, couples, and families seeking help with life’s challenges. The organization’s services include trauma-focused therapy, play therapy for children, parenting education, and individual and family counseling. By joining the TennCare network, Kindred Place can now offer these vital services to more residents who rely on Medicaid for their healthcare needs.

“Removing access barriers—financial and otherwise—to these services has always been a key part of our mission,” said Dr. Sharon Griffin, Executive Director of Program Implementation. “Now, we’re able to serve an even larger sector of the city and ensure that families in need can receive the care they deserve.”

Accepting TennCare allows Kindred Place to address a growing community need for affordable behavioral health services. Shelby County continues to experience high rates of mental health challenges among both children and adults, and cost remains one of the biggest obstacles to care. With TennCare now accepted, families and individuals can access counseling at little or no out-of-pocket cost.

Appointments are available Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. Individuals interested in scheduling an intake or confirming TennCare eligibility can call (901) 276-2200 or visit www.kindred-place.org

With this new development—and under the stewardship of SchoolSeed Foundation—Kindred Place reaffirms its commitment to helping families heal, grow, and thrive across the Memphis community.

Thanks to your generosity, Kindred Place is not only open but thriving—serving as a vital source of emotional healing for families across Memphis. Your contributions are helping us meet an ever-growing need, and the latest data from June 2025 proves just how critical your support continues to be.

Growing Demand, Real Lives Impacted
This past month, Kindred Place served 119 individuals through trauma-informed therapy and counseling. Of those, 54 were new clients—many seeking help for the first time. Perhaps more powerful is that 65 clients returned to continue their healing journey. This consistency reflects what we know to be true: therapy works, and when trust is built, people come back.

What Are Clients Coming For?
While June services were still being finalized in our reporting tools, past trends confirm that individuals are engaging in:

Individual counseling sessions (the most requested service)
Anger management programs for men
Domestic violence support for women
Parenting classes (English and Spanish)
Youth art therapy groups for emotional processing
Your donation makes these services possible—and free or low-cost for families in need.

A Cross-Section of Our City

What makes your impact even more meaningful is who you’re helping:

👶 Age Diversity

From children to seniors, we served:

Children aged 8–12 and teens 13–18 (largest group)
Adults 31–50, many of them parents and caregivers
Older adults 60+ still healing from past trauma

🧑🏽‍🤝‍🧑🏾 Racial and Ethnic Representation

The majority of clients identify as African American
A growing number of Latino families are being welcomed and served
This reflects the diverse Memphis population—and your help ensures all feel safe and seen

🗣️ Languages Spoken

English remains primary, but a significant number of Spanish-speaking clients are turning to us
Your support allows us to provide Spanish-language parenting courses and translation assistance—removing barriers to access

Why Your Support Matters
Behind every number is a name. A child learning to cope. A mother recovering her confidence. A father discovering better ways to parent. These are not just services—they are lifelines.

You’ve helped revive Kindred Place after it nearly closed its doors last year. Now, because of you, it is a trusted place of hope for so many.

Next Steps: Help Us Grow Our Reach
As the demand for services grows, so does the need for sustained donor support. Your continued giving will:

Expand bilingual and youth-focused services
Support additional licensed therapists
Eliminate remaining debt and build for long-term sustainability

We hope you feel proud of what you’ve made possible. Kindred Place is here today—and growing stronger—because of you.
