The Profession

Physical therapy is a unique and vital health profession concerned with health promotion, prevention of physical disabilities and the habilitation/rehabilitation of persons disabled by pain, disease, or injury. 👟 A Day in the Life of a PT

This past weekend, our DPT students helped lead a “Day in the Life of a Physical Therapist/Student” experience as part of the Saturday Academy, and they absolutely crushed it.

Our DPT1s stepped up in a big way, showcasing just how much they’ve learned already by teaching and engaging with others in hands-on activities. From foundational skills to real-world application, they brought energy, confidence, and professionalism throughout the day.

We’re incredibly proud of their growth and their willingness to give back by sharing what they’re learning with the next generation. This is what future clinicians in action looks like. 👏

😂 April Fools’ Day, DPT Style

Who needs a backpack when you’ve got… a lawnmower?

Our DPT1s celebrated “Anything But a Backpack Day” in true PT fashion, creative, slightly chaotic, and fully committed. From the usual alternatives to one unforgettable lawnmower entrance, this group understood the assignment.

We love seeing our students bring personality and fun into the program—because sometimes the best way to get through the grind is with a little creativity (and apparently, yard equipment 😅).

Safe to say… this one will be tough to top next year.

🎤📊 UTHSC PT Faculty Representing at CSM

We’re proud to highlight the collaborative scholarship of our faculty at CSM, including Drs. LaToya Green, Barry Dale, and Kim Carter, who contributed to multiple presentations advancing physical therapy education and clinical practice.

Together, they delivered a platform presentation, “Cracking the Code to PT Success: Risk Factors Revealed Using Regression and ROC Analysis,” offering important insights into student success and performance.

In addition, Dr. Green, in collaboration with colleagues from other institutions, contributed to two poster presentations:

🩸 Effects of Myofascial Release with Blood Flow Restriction on Pectoralis Major Strength and Length

🎓 Leading through Service: Faculty Mentorship Practices Associated with Increased Interprofessional Socialization Among Physical Therapy Students

This work reflects the strength of team-based scholarship and inter-institutional collaboration at UTHSC. We’re proud of our faculty for continuing to contribute meaningful research that impacts both education and patient care. 💙

Our Department Chair and Program Director, Dr. Barry Dale, is grateful and humbled to be recognized as the 2026 Outstanding Physical Therapy Educator by the Tennessee Physical Therapy Association.
"This honor is not mine alone—it reflects the collective commitment of an exceptional faculty at UTHSC who show up every day with purpose, integrity, and a shared dedication to developing the next generation of physical therapists. I am equally inspired by our students, whose work ethic, resilience, and pursuit of excellence continually raise the bar.
I have always believed that leadership in education is rooted in service. It means creating an environment where others can succeed, grow, and ultimately surpass expectations. Part of that responsibility is holding a standard—one that is not always easy, and not always comfortable, but is necessary to prepare our students for the realities of clinical practice and the responsibility they carry to their patients.
To our faculty: Thank you for your unwavering commitment to excellence.
To our students: Thank you for trusting the process and rising to the challenge.
This recognition simply reinforces the mission—we keep showing up, we keep improving, and we keep serving."--Barry Dale

🏆 INTRAMURAL CHAMPIONS. UNDEFEATED. 🏀

The Ballin’ Sockets just capped off an incredible season with a 60–41 championship win, finishing the year undefeated.

Dominant defense. Smooth ball movement. Clinical ex*****on (we’d expect nothing less 😉). From the first tip-off to the final buzzer, this squad brought the same intensity and teamwork we see in the classroom and clinic.

Future physical therapists by day… intramural legends by night.

Congratulations to the Ballin’ Sockets on bringing home the title! 🧡🔥

📐How good is your clinical eye?

This week in lab, our students (and faculty 👀) put their skills to the test with a goniometry guessing game — estimating joint angles before checking with the actual measurement.

Let’s just say… some confidence levels were higher than the degrees measured 😅

Learning goniometric measurement doesn’t have to be all serious faces and landmark alignment. Sometimes the best way to sharpen your clinical accuracy is to turn it into a little friendly competition.

Who do you think had the best eye — students or faculty? 👀🦵

We loved seeing Dr. Chris-Mike Agbelie present at CSM on Integrating Behavioral Health into Stroke Rehabilitation, highlighting important gaps in post-stroke care, including ongoing smoking and the significant mental health burden many survivors face.

Using national data, his research identified high-risk groups and emphasized the need for integrating behavioral health screening and collaborative care pathways directly into PT-led stroke rehabilitation. This kind of work strengthens how we think about whole-person recovery.

And maybe the best part? Seeing how excited his former students were to spend time with him at CSM. That kind of mentorship lasts well beyond the classroom!
