Kristen Hughes, PA-C, explains that this type of pain can be a sign of radiculopathy, caused by pressure on a spinal nerve. It is often described as electric, burning, or accompanied by numbness, tingling, or weakness.

Kristen is part of the neurosurgery team at Semmes Murphey Clinic, working alongside Chris Nickele, MD, and Andrew Boucher, MD, to help patients understand what’s causing their pain and determine the right next step.

Last week, we had the honor of welcoming Dr. Rowland’s family to Semmes Murphey Clinic for a special reception celebrating the life and legacy of Joseph P. Rowland, MD.

His family generously donated personal surgical instruments and memorabilia, now on display as The Mechanics of Healing, offering a meaningful look at decades of neurosurgical care. The evening was made even more impactful by a $25,000 gift to the Semmes Murphey Foundation, helping carry Dr. Rowland’s legacy forward through education, research, and compassionate care. We are proud to expand stroke and neurointerventional care at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto , bringing comprehensive, full-service treatment closer to home for patients in Mississippi.

This growing stroke service offers coordinated care for patients experiencing stroke or cerebrovascular conditions, including outpatient procedures and advanced evaluations. The effort is being led by Dr. Violiza Inoa, whose commitment to timely, expert care is helping shape what this service means for the community.

“Stroke care is something I’m deeply passionate about because I’ve seen how the right care, delivered at the right time, can change a person’s life. Being able to bring that level of care closer to home for patients in this community is incredibly important to me.”-Dr. Violiza Inoa
