With all of the festive activities available, sometimes it can feel like we’re just not doing enough.😔

As parents we wonder if we’re giving our kids the best holiday experience, the best childhood…🎄

Especially if our kids have experienced significant heartaches, we may feel the need to fill this season with fun distractions or to make up for lost time.💔

But the reality is, our kids need us more than they need distractions. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed trying to plan and organize all the Christmas activities, just don’t! 🛑

For some kids, lots of activities can be overwhelming anyway, not to mention how overwhelming it can be for parents.😩

But connection is the greatest give you can give your kids this holiday season, and it will also be a gift for you. 🎁

What are your favorite low key ways to spend time together over the holidays?⤵️

The holiday season often brings a lot of sweet treats which can be overwhelming for some parents, so if you find these strategies, please share them!🫶

And please note that these tips are meant for a child with a secure attachment to their caregivers.🗝️

For kids who enter our homes through foster care and adoption, felt safety and connection take time and patience.❤️‍🩹

Eventually they will open up to trying new things, but your #1 priority should be helping these kids feel safe around food.🛟

It’s important for kids to have access to a variety of foods, including their favorite sweet treats. This promotes a lifelong healthy relationship with food.🍦

💥The goal is not to restrict sugar altogether or it will backfire! And keep language around food neutral. Follow for more nutrition tips focused on connection💥

I love this Kung Pao chicken from tj. It takes me less than 10 minutes to heat it up on the stove and serve it with rice - boom! Dinner is ready and everyone loves it!

It’s so important for us to be a good example for our kids.

And this includes not feeling like we have to do all the things all the time like make every meal from scratch.

It’s so important that we show our kids it’s OK to take breaks and do things that make our lives a little less stressful.

We don’t want our kids to have unrealistic expectations for themselves or feel like they are failing if they take shortcuts.

Lowering stress is extremely important to our mental and physical health. and that includes grabbing fast food when you need to.

Feed your kids and don’t teach them to feel guilty about not doing it perfectly healthfully every time.

Hope that makes sense?!

As a pediatric dietitian comments about anyone’s eating behaviors, drive me crazy. But especially when those comments are towards children, it really frustrates me.😖

What many people don’t know is that most kids have genuine reasons to have different behaviors around food. It could be any of the following:
🔎neurodivergence (autism/adhd)
🔎sensory processing disorder
🔎trauma history
🔎food insecurity
🔎pediatric feeding disorder
🔎avoidant restrictive food intake disorder
🔎and more…

There’s almost always a reason behind the behavior. But it can be exhausting having to explain yourself or your child, and sometimes it’s really no one’s business.❤️‍🩹

So the next time this happens to you, maybe just share this reel so people can learn why their comments are not needed. 🤷‍♀️

What’s the most awkward comment you’ve heard about your kids eating behaviors?⤵️

Anyone’s kids sound like this after a meal?! Not mine!😆

Sure, we need to teach our kids to be grateful and polite, but we also need to be realistic. And they may not be grateful for the food that people worked hard to prepare.🤷‍♀️

The best way to teach our kids gratitude is to be a model of it ourselves.🙏🏽

I hope you take many opportunities to share the things you’re grateful for with your kids during this Thanksgiving.🦃

I’m grateful for all of you following along and also sweet potato casserole and pumpkin anything🍠🎃🧡

I’m a pediatric dietitian and these are my top tips for lowering stress for you and your kids at big holiday meals (like Thanksgiving)🦃

If you’re observant, you probably noticed I left out #3, that was a complete accident 🙈 and it’s an important one so I’ve outlined the top tips below:

#1: prepare your kids

#2: empower your kids with choices

#3: lower your expectations

#4: expect and validate big feelings

#5: focus on connection

I promise in 10 years from now you’re not going to be thinking I wish my kid had eaten more at Thanksgiving.

And holidays can be very overstimulating or triggering for some kids, so show them a lot of grace.

Secure finances are nice, but my time with these kids is far more valuable.💞

Admittedly, we did not choose to homeschool solely for the extra time together, but it has been such a great benefit. 📚

We said we would take it one year at a time and see what they need and what we can handle, but it’s starting to look like it would be really hard to give up all this precious time with them…🥹

How do you redeem lost time with your kids? There are certainly other ways aside from homeschooling, I’d love to know what others have found. ⤵️
