Isn’t it funny how as adults we always get to choose what we will eat but we don’t usually give that choice to our kids?

Now I know some of you are saying, kids are too immature to make those decisions. Maybe you’d say, “my kids would only choose ‘junk’” or “my kids would never choose vegetables”.

Some of this could be true which is why our kids need an opportunity to make choices within boundaries.

Hi, I’m a pediatric dietitian and foster/adoptive mom, and I’ve learned a lot bout feeding kids both professionally and from personal experience.

There’s so much research to support how autonomy helps our kids overall health which is why I always recommend serving meals family-style!

I don’t “give up” any foods as a dietitian for 3 main reasons:

1️⃣ Research (and lived experience) prove that restricting food doesn’t work. Once you tell yourself you can’t have something, it consumes you and you want it more than you did before you gave it up.

2️⃣ I love food and my mental health is just as important as my physical health. Annnd mental health has a direct impact on physical health.

3️⃣ I have 2 daughters who pay very close attention to everything I do. Witnessing a parent diet or restrict foods significantly increases the risk of developing an eating disorder.

Am I saying that I just eat anything and everything I want in whatever quantity? Nope!

I didn’t eat an entire pie. I actually felt full after eating half of the giant slice and saved the rest, because I didn’t have the restrict/binge mindset: “I have to eat every last bite because I don’t know when I’ll be able to eat something like this again.”
