Why you should put your child to work…

You may be thinking we are suggesting chores and giving kids extra jobs to help around the house. But, we are getting kids involved in “heavy work” activities for another purpose.

We’re building the child’s proprioceptive input! Many kids who have ADHD-like symptoms or sensory seeking behavior often need play that requires “heavy work” to calm their body and the brain.

Activities or even certain types of “chores” can send messages to the proprioceptive system helping regulate the child’s behaviors and emotions.

Some “heavy work” activities may include the following:

💪Carry a backpack and fill it with books or collect rocks and branches while on a hike
💪Push a wheelbarrow
💪Shovel snow
💪Jump rope
💪Pick up books

You can use a variety of activities to help the child push, pull, jump or climb.

Americans throw away 25% more waste between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than any other time during the year!

The good news is we can all take steps to minimize our waste whether your area offers recycling services or not. Dr. Sherry Surrette with our MSU Extension Sustainable Living program offers the following tips for recycling some common holiday items:

♻️Repurpose Christmas cards into gift tags or ornaments that can be used next Christmas.

♻️Save ribbons and bows and reuse them on gifts next year. These items are often made from materials that are not easily recycled.

♻️Wrap delicate tree ornaments for storage with used wrapping paper when the Christmas tree is taken down. Shredded wrapping paper can also be used as shipping material when mailing fragile packages. In addition, shredded wrapping paper can be placed in compost bins where it will biodegrade back into soil for gardening.

♻️Donate unwanted gifts to local charities or regift them. You can also try hosting an after-Christmas present swap with friends, where all the presents are displayed, and everyone takes turns picking out another gift that they like better.

♻️Place real Christmas trees in your garden or backyard for birds to use as shelter during the winter months instead of putting them in the garbage. Trees can also be sunk in private ponds where they make excellent refuge and feeding areas for fish. If you live in an apartment, contact your local public works department to find out if tree recycling or mulching services are available in your area.

♻️Compost leftover fruits and vegetables to minimize your holiday food waste. This will help put nutrients back into the soil.

According to a recent study, forward head position and blood flow to the brain are clinically observable by taking the carotid pulses and can lead to debilitating symptoms within the brain.

The carotid pulses are weaker when the head is in a forward position; however, the carotid pulses are stronger when the head is over the spine.

When the head is forward over the spine, the brain may not receive sufficient blood flow and oxygen due to compression of the carotid arteries. If this compression is severe enough, it can result in cerebral ischemia (CNS dysfunction). Clinically, we see disturbed sleeping patterns, increased anxiety, and mental N sluggishness.

The March 2000 Mayo Clinic reported that prolonged FHP also leads to myospasm, disc herniations, arthritis, and pinched nerves.

Dr. Alf Breig, a Swedish neurosurgeon and Nobel Prize recipient, describes how the loss of a normal cervical lordotic curve creates dysfunction and disease.

Through cadaver studies, Dr. Breig demonstrated that neck flexion could stretch the spinal cord 5-7 cm causing tensioning of the meninges (covering of the brain and spinal cord) and elicit measurable pressure on brainstem nuclei (nerve control centers) which control all basic life functions. (Breig, Alf.
Adverse Mechanical Tension in the Central Nervous System: An Analysis of Cause and Effect. 1978. Almqvuist & Wiksell
International, Stockholm, Sweden. Pg. 177.)

New studies show that correction of cervical lordosis may be associated with an immediate increase in cerebral blood flow.
