Before Black History Month ends, we want to proudly honor the extraordinary contributions of Black Women whose courage, compassion, and innovation helped shape the future of women’s health and medicine.
Trailblazers like Dr. Helen Octavia Dickens — the first Black woman admitted to the American College of Surgeons — and Dr. Marilyn Hughes Gaston, whose work transformed newborn screening and preventive care, opened doors that continue to improve outcomes for mothers, babies, and families today.
In OB-GYN care- representation, advocacy, and culturally compassionate medicine matter. Black physicians, nurses, midwives, researchers, and community leaders have played a powerful role in advancing maternal health awareness, improving access to care, and championing healthier futures.
