Be honest.

Does this look like what you expected a cemetery to feel like?

👍 Peaceful
❤️ Beautiful
😮 Surprising

This is the main entrance at Memorial Park.

A lot of families tell me this is the moment everything changes for them…
because it doesn’t feel how they thought it would.

One of the most meaningful things about Memorial Park is seeing how many families rest together here.

It’s common to see grandparents, parents, and children all in the same section of the park.

For many families, Memorial Park has served as a place of remembrance for generations.

When people walk the grounds, they’re not just visiting a cemetery.

They’re visiting family history.

One of the most interesting things about Memorial Park is that some of the features around the grounds are actually pieces of art.

Several sculptures in the park were created by a famous artist named Dionicio Rodriguez.

He had a unique skill building things out of concrete that look exactly like wood.

Some of the benches, bridges, and tree features around the park may look like carved wood, but they are actually solid concrete sculptures.

Many people walk right past them without realizing they’re looking at historic artwork.

Next time you visit Memorial Park, keep an eye out for the details.

Hidden inside Memorial Park is something most people in Memphis don’t even realize exists.

A crystal cave.

The Crystal Shrine Grotto was built in the 1930s and contains tons of real quartz crystal embedded in the walls. Inside the cave are sculpted scenes that walk visitors through the life of Christ.

Many people drive past Memorial Park their entire lives without knowing there’s a man-made crystal cave hidden inside the property.

It’s one of the most unique places in Memphis.

If you’ve never seen it before, it’s worth the walk through the park.

Most people assume cemeteries were designed to feel quiet… heavy… even a little intimidating.

But Memorial Park was built with a completely different idea.

When the park was created in the 1920s, the founder, E. Clovis Hinds, believed a cemetery should feel more like a beautiful park than a graveyard.

His philosophy was something he called “democracy in death.”

In other words — no towering monuments showing wealth or status. Every family would rest in a peaceful, natural setting.

That vision is why when you walk through Memorial Park today you’ll see things like:

• bridges
• fountains
• flower gardens
• tree-lined drives

He called the idea “The Cemetery Beautiful.”

Nearly 100 years later, that same vision still shapes the park.

If you’ve never walked through Memorial Park before, you might be surprised by how peaceful it is. I’m always happy to give short park tours and share some of the hidden history around the grounds.
