Volunteer Appreciation Week | Day Five!
Let's wrap up our week of shout-outs by recognizing the absolutely amazing students that volunteer with us. They bring curiosity, insight, and compassion to all their interactions with the people Living Well supports. In addition to spending fun time with people, some students participate in advocacy activities as well. We are eternally grateful for the students' passion for disability justice and inclusion today and into the future!

Advocacy Update: Where Things Stand in the 2026 Legislative Session

Written by guest writer, John-Paul Yates, Director, Public Affairs, Goff Public

Last week, both the House and Senate human services committees passed their supplemental budget bills. These supplemental budget bills are omnibus bills, collections of smaller bills combined together, generally along a single topic like human services. The human services omnibus bills this year are smaller than normal. This reflects the realities of this short non-budget session, the tied House, and a challenging budget outlook for the state.

While these bills face an uncertain path to becoming law this session, they do contain some good items. Most importantly, neither body included items from the Governor’s supplemental budget proposal which would have further cut disability services. The Governor proposed limiting residential service providers to billing only for 351 days per year, as well as capping annual inflation adjustments at 2% within the Disability Waiver Rate Setting system (DWRS). Thankfully, neither body included these items in their supplemental budget bills.

The other good news is that in their policy omnibus bills, both the House and Senate human services committees included language that will give providers and recipients of Individualized Home Supports (IHS-T) with more flexibility, and which reflects the reality of how these services are provided. The bill changes the hourly cap for IHS-T services to a monthly cap from a daily cap.

Over the next four weeks, the Minnesota Legislature will need to pass these omnibus bills out of their respective finance committees and pass them off the House and Senate floors for a conference committee to happen. Normally, it would be more of a formality that omnibus bills will make it through finance committees and their respective floors, but there are a few complicating factors this year.

Volunteer Appreciation Week | Day Four
Did you know it's Thankful Thursday? Well it is! Today we want to THANK the tireless, committed volunteers that make "hot dish" meals and deliver meals EVERY WEEK to Living Well's 36 homes located throughout the Twin Cities metro area and beyond. Volunteers assemble up to 72 freezer meal casserole pans so that all our homes that want them can receive 2 prepared meals per week to help on busy nights. Then volunteers pick up the frozen meals from our main office, along with mail and supplies, and personally deliver to each and every home. That's hundreds of miles every week. What started as a way to stay connected during the pandemic has continued to be one of everyone's favorite feel-good, taste-good community interactions.

Volunteer Appreciation Week | Day Three Happy Earth Day! As Living Well's partner Wilderness Inquiry believes, "Everyone deserves a meaningful connection to the natural world". Volunteers help make sure one option for people we support to enjoy nature is right outside their door! Volunteers participate by prepping our homes' yards and gardens for the spring season, delivering plants for horticulture therapy, cleaning up in the fall, and sometimes digging in the dirt right alongside people. As Living Well's nature-based therapy partners from The UMN Arboretum say, "A connection to nature is essential for human health and wellbeing." Thank you volunteers for supporting our wellness culture!

Volunteer Appreciation Week | Day Two Today we are celebrating the "Handy" people that work behind the scenes to keep our homes in ship-shape! From painting to building a shelf to hanging a TV to organizing a garage volunteers put their skill into ensuring the people we support have a fresh and organized home to live in. Not only do these projects impact people supported but they also save staff time and house budgets. And we appreciate the friendships developed along the way!
