It was a fun Week at Living Well Disability Services!

On Tuesday, staff from our Northland Office were invited to bring their kids to volunteer for our Meal Makers program. Regional Director, Josie Jeffrey, brought her two children, Cael and Poppy, and Communications Manager, Heather Heier, brought her middle schooler, Alex. In a funny twist, almost exactly five years ago back in 2021, he came to volunteer with his grandparents and cousins. We have done several family events over the years, and time flies when you LOVE volunteering!!

With help from Customized Services Program Manager, Ryan Guenther, and a volunteer from Inndale, they made 30 pans of chicken parmesan, shrimp fajitas, and chicken gnocchi with alfredo pesto sauce. Each meal helps make dinner prep a breeze at our homes, and we are so grateful to see families making time to volunteer together!

Then Wednesday was the first Happy Hour in support of Pints for Purpose. Throughout the month of April, $1 from every 16-ounce pour of Union 32’s Happy Hour Haze will be donated to Living Well. And because they love us so much, midweek they offer Living Well Wednesdays. Every Wednesday from open to 6 p.m., Union 32 will donate $1 from every order of Happy Hour Pretzel Bites to Living Well.

The program highlights local nonprofits doing important work across the Twin Cities while encouraging the community to support them in a fun and accessible way. Go grab a pint or some pretzels and support Living Well at the same time.

Disability Services Day at the Capitol was held this Tuesday, March 24, and even with huge lines due to increased security there was a HUGE turnout. Folks supported by Living Well along with staff, families, volunteers, and board members proudly gathered as a group of 100 advocates, joining hundreds of others from various organizations who traveled to the Capitol from all over Minnesota.

The rally started at 10AM and meetings with individual senators and representatives were scheduled throughout the day until late afternoon. As always, the primary reason we make the effort to attend is to share stories with the elected officials who represent the neighborhoods we call home, and to help them better understand why people with disabilities deserve funding. Everyone shared folders, some came with signs, Program Manager Jenny Schwoch even enlisted her son to help bring extra signs for anyone who wanted one, a few waited over 30 minutes to get into the rally, and everyone brought their own stories to share.

Here are what people had to say when asked about the day and what it meant to them to be there:

Sam Subah, Program Manager at Cloman, has been with Living Well for 30 years and has attended many meetings and rallies at the Capitol over the past three decades. He said, “One of the highlights for me at Disability Services Day at the Capitol was having the opportunity to see Dan really shine as he shared his recorded message directly with Rep. Mary Francis Clardy. With the use of his device, he was able to express himself in his own way, and she was really engaged. She listened closely and seemed genuinely moved by what he had to say.” Dan talked about his life, his experiences, and how important his caregivers are to him. At 75 years old, he said he is able to live the life he does because of their support, and that’s why his biggest advocacy is for the providers who make that possible.

Always the businessman, Dan also told her about his movie, “How to Care,” in which Rep. Clardy was also featured (parts of the film were filmed back at the Capitol in 2024). And as they left the meeting and headed to the elevator, she was already watching it on her phone. Sam says with a smile, “It was all about Dan and how he wants to see things get better—for people like him and for the people who care for him. He also shared the recording with Rep. Rick Hansen. What stood out most to me was that they truly listened. That meant a lot.”
