GENE MICHAELS

1/19/1942-2/16/2026

Born on January 19, 1942, in Menominee, MI, Eugene Michael Smiltneck (aka Gene Michaels) was the son and first child of Arnold Joseph Smiltneck and Marian Elizabeth Hafeman Smiltneck of Menominee County.

As a child, Gene was active and curious, especially excelling in music and football. Early on, he also took a keen interest in turn-of-the century entrepreneurs such as Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Like them, he loved experimenting with inventions and new ideas for enterprises.

In the late 1950s as a student at Menominee High School, Gene started a rock band called the Vikings. He was also an all-state football player, recruited to play college ball at Western Michigan University. More than once during his teens, Gene landed in the hospital with a broken nose or fractured bone from a football game, only to hurry back to the gym to play his bass guitar in his band for the Friday night sock hop.

Over his lifetime, Gene took on dozens of entrepreneurial careers, including musician, booking agent, event planner, entertainment provider, limousine service provider, real estate agent and insurance agent. He developed a home inspection and home improvement business in Wisconsin before moving to California to try his hand at Hollywood talent management.

When he was nearing age 80, Gene launched one of the most meaningful careers of his lifetime when he obtained a three-year contract with the government to help people without homes in Santa Barbara, CA.

One of many programs Gene introduced involved transportation for people who did not own cars. He located dozens of used bikes to enable his clients to get to work and other activities. He not only procured many used two-wheelers, but he also had them repaired by a friend, painted, and decorated before passing them on to their proud, new owners.

Gene was preceded in death by both his parents, Marian Hafeman Smiltneck and Arnold Smiltneck, and also by his brother Leon Smiltneck. He is survived by his sister Susan and her husband John Maciak (Grand Rapids, MI), Janis Smiltneck (Battle Creek, MI) and Julie Michaels (Menominee, MI).

He leaves his wife of the past 30 years, Pat (Rupiper Dieck) Michaels, along with four adult children from his earlier marriage to Lynn Dee La Pointe: Darla Diamantte (Escanaba, MI), Jo Ellen (Jim) Lusardi (Sobieski, WI), Kerry (Steve) Delgoffe (Menominee, MI) and Robin Michaels (Oconto Falls, WI). Gene is also survived by his two step-children: Andrea Dieck (Jamey) Wagner (Santa Barbara) and John Dieck (Irvine, CA).

Gene leaves his six grandchildren: Brooke Delgoffe (Spencer, WI), Courtney (Bo) Borgnakke (Ann Arbor, MI); Natalie Delgoffe (Las Vegas, NV), Alexa (Cole) Diamante (Honolulu, HI), Hannah (Sebastian) Dieck-Hensley (Berkeley, CA), Ash Wagner (Oakland, CA), Em Wagner (Portland, OR), Tyler Dieck (Orinda, CA), Paige Dieck (Broomfield, CO) and Carson Dieck (Irvine, CA), plus three great-grandchildren.

MARK ALLEN STREETER

With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we share that our beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, Mark Streeter, entered eternal rest on February 13, joining his Heavenly Father. Mark passed peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on August 15, 1962, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mark spent his early years in Wisconsin and Michigan before moving to California, where he completed his schooling. His life journey eventually brought him back to Michigan, which he called home for many years. Mark built a career rooted in hard work and dedication, beginning in the grocery industry before transitioning into Network Administration, where his reliability and commitment were well known.

Mark approached life with enthusiasm, humor, and an unshakable love for the things that brought him joy. A lifelong sports fan, he cheered passionately for the San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers. He was equally at home at the poker table—where he delighted in friendly competition—or out on the golf course, which was his true passion. Golf was more than a game to Mark; it was a testament to his spirit. Over his lifetime, he achieved 6 holes in one —one after being declared legally blind and another after a leg amputation—remarkable milestones that perfectly reflected his belief that passion and perseverance triumph over limitation.

Throughout his lifelong journey with diabetes, Mark faced extraordinary challenges with courage, grace, and an unwaveringly positive outlook. He refused to let obstacles define him, instead choosing gratitude, humor, and determination. His resilience and joy for life left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him and continued to inspire his family and friends.

Mark is survived by his devoted wife of 31 years, Rosie Streeter; his children Jordan (Christian) Russomanno, Alexandra (Terrell) Dunn, and PJ Panagopoulous; and his cherished grandchildren Jeremiah, Rhyan, Roman, and Theodor, all of California. He is also survived by his mother, Nancy Streeter of Foley, Alabama; his siblings Bruce (Donna) Streeter of Mobile, Alabama, and Craig (Kristine) Streeter of Atlanta, Georgia; along with six beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Ed Streeter.

A celebration of Mark’s life will be held in late spring or early summer, allowing family and friends to gather and honor a man whose life was defined by love, perseverance, and joy. Details will be shared at a later date. Cadieu Funeral Home is assisting the Streeter family with arrangements.
