❄️ Cold Weather Alert: Protect Your Water Storage Tanks ❄️
With frigid temperatures settling in, ice formation inside water storage tanks becomes a serious risk. The photos shown here are from a current Wisconsin emergency and are a reminder of how quickly conditions can escalate.
Stay ahead of freezing risks
When temperatures drop below freezing, closely monitor and adjust pump cycles based on your tank’s exchange rate.
• Tanks are most vulnerable overnight when water demand and turnover are lower
• Keeping water moving by increasing turnover during extreme cold helps prevent ice buildup
Regular inspections matter
Frequent visual inspections of your tank and operating system are critical. Check pipes, control panels, valves, sample taps, and heating elements regularly. Rapid temperature changes can cause expansion and contraction, leading to breaks or leaks if issues go unnoticed.
Also be sure to clear snow and debris so all components remain accessible.
Have an emergency plan
It may cost a little more to keep water moving during extreme cold, but that cost is minimal compared to a frozen tank or burst pipe.
