✨Facilitator Spotlight: Howard (Vancouver, BC)✨

Howard brings empathy, learning, and encouragement into every SMART Recovery meeting he facilitates. He describes his facilitation style as empathic, educational, and empowering, and those values guide how he supports participants week after week.

Howard is particularly drawn to the SMART Recovery message “Discover the power of choice.” For him, recovery is about supporting people in reconnecting with their own agency and confidence, especially when things feel hard. This perspective shapes how he introduces SMART tools and creates space for meaningful reflection and growth.

The most rewarding part of facilitating for Howard is witnessing participants rediscover hope. Seeing someone reconnect with a sense of possibility on their journey of discovery and transformation is what makes the work so meaningful to him.

If there is one thing Howard wishes every new participant knew, it is that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Simply showing up is already a powerful step forward.

Outside of meetings, Howard recharges by spending time along Vancouver’s seawall. Watching the sun set over the ocean helps him clear his mind and restore his energy.

We are grateful for the care, presence, and encouragement Howard brings to the SMART Recovery community.

🌟 SMART Recovery at the 2025 Issues of Substance Conference 🌟
Halifax • November 17–19

SMART Recovery Canada was proud to participate in this year’s Issues of Substance (IOS) Conference, hosted by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction. IOS brings together substance use health workers, healthcare professionals, researchers, policy makers, and individuals with lived and living experience from across the country.

As part of the program, SMART Recovery Canada Secretary, Antoinette Gravel-Ouellette, offered a SMART session for attendees. The session included an introduction to SMART for those discovering it for the first time, along with elements of a meeting-style check-in for participants who were looking for a meeting experience. It was warmly received and sparked meaningful conversations about choice, self-empowerment, and evidence-informed recovery supports.

We are grateful for the opportunity to share SMART’s tools and approach with such a diverse and engaged audience.

This Giving Tuesday, I’m proud to support a cause that’s close to my heart, SMART Recovery Canada.

Every day, people across the country find hope and healing through free, stigma-free, and science-based recovery meetings — both online and in person.

This year’s campaign, “Recovery in the Open,” is about exactly that: making recovery visible so stigma can fade.

Thanks to the generosity of Mosaic Home Services, every dollar donated through December 2 will be matched up to $2,000 - doubling the impact of every gift.

Your support helps keep SMART meetings active, train new facilitators, and expand specialized programming nationwide.
