Sanctuary Massage, Barbara Needham-Leitner LMT

Sanctuary Massage, Barbara Needham-Leitner LMT An experienced and passionate massage and bodywork therapist, I am versed in multiple modalities.

For information/scheduling of studio sessions,
At home sessions, on site/virtual workshops,
CPR & First Aid Certification call 908 578 7218 or visit http://www.sanctuarymassageenterprises.com/ As a graduate of the North Jersey School of Massage, my philosophy is firmly grounded in holistic practice and the balance of body, mind and spirit. My professional career has afforded me the privilege to work with and beside great therapists, estheticians, educators and health care practitioners. I was granted the opportunity to teach at multiple locations, serve as the Program Director for an accredited Massage School in Jersey City for several years and work with an NFL team for a season. I am so proud to see the success of so many of my students in the field of Massage Therapy. During the course of my career, I have been involved in many volunteer efforts, none so close to me as that following the September 11th attacks in New York. My experience with all those I encountered during that time significantly impacted my method of practice and empathetic connection with my clients. In addition to the emotional release work I provide, medical, lymphatic drainage, prenatal and sports massage sessions are also available. Over the last decade, I have witnessed a change in culture in the field of massage therapy and am acutely aware of the need for and benefit of quality sessions. In the age of an educated consumer, I am attuned to the expectations of potential clients and as a result have chosen to partner with Yon-ka Paris, as a Certified Treatment Specialist. I am excited to introduce my clients to the phyto-aromatic properties and benefits of the in house treatment protocols and home use products offered through this partnership. These massage, spa treatments for the face and body and products are formulated to augment and enhance the client experience, engaging the senses and allowing for transcendence during a session and immediate results. They are an amazing addition to my practice and I cannot wait to share them with you.

I'm always amazed both personally and professionally, with the impact alignment creates.

From a postural.alignment that opens up my chest and allows me to breathe.more deeply and gain mental clarity, to a daily intention mantra or list where my thoughts or desires become actionable tasks. Alignment allows for ease and flow. It signals that I'm connected, listening and able to participate fully in my day.

What do you do to ensure alignment in your life?

Wishing you all a day of calm within your body and love in your heart. ❤️

Why do my muscles hurt when I have a virus?

It’s not uncommon to experience muscle aches, stiffness, or even a bruised sensation after recovering from a viral illness. These lingering symptoms are often the result of the body’s inflammatory response combined with contracted or overworked muscles during the illness.

When the immune system fights a virus, inflammatory chemicals are released into the bloodstream. This can cause muscles to tighten, reducing circulation and oxygen flow. As the body tries to repair, the tightened muscles can mimic the sensation of bruising, leaving you sore, tender, and fatigued even after the fever and primary symptoms resolve.

Therapeutic massage helps by:

Reducing inflammation: Gentle, targeted techniques help calm inflammatory activity and promote circulation, allowing waste products to clear more efficiently.

Releasing contracted muscles: Massage eases tension patterns that form during illness, restoring flexibility and comfort.

Improving circulation and oxygen delivery: This speeds up the body’s natural healing process and helps flush lingering viral by-products.

Soothing the nervous system: The body often remains in a “stress mode” after illness; massage activates the parasympathetic system, allowing deeper rest and recovery.

Easing the bruised sensation: By improving muscle elasticity and reducing micro-tension, massage alleviates the residual soreness many describe as feeling like “post-flu bruises.”

When integrated into recovery, therapeutic massage not only relieves physical discomfort but also supports the emotional reset needed after illness, leaving the body refreshed, balanced, and ready to regain strength.

As we end the summer and move into back to school days, viruses are abundant. Share this info with a friend or family member.
