🖍️ More Than Just Color: Finding Healing in Crayons on National Crayon Day 🖍

Today, March 31st, is National Crayon Day! It’s a day to celebrate the joy of coloring, the nostalgia of a brand-new box of 64 (with the sharpener!), and the creativity that lives in all of us.

But on this day, we also want to recognize how these simple wax sticks can be a powerful tool for navigating something complex: Grief.

🎨 How Crayons Help Process Grief:
A Safe Outlet for Big Emotions: When words are too heavy, coloring can help externalize sadness, fear, or anger. It allows us to put our grief onto paper where we can see it and work with it.
Calming the Mind: Studies show that coloring, for adults and children, can be a form of mindfulness, reducing anxiety and providing a calming, tactile sensory input during stressful times.

"Broken Crayons Still Color": Just like our lives after loss, crayons can break, yet they still work—perhaps creating even more unique art. It’s a reminder that we can be broken and still create something beautiful.
Therapeutic Tool: Art therapy uses crayons to help people—especially children—express feelings they cannot articulate.

This National Crayon Day, we encourage you to:
Grab a coloring book (or just a blank sheet of paper) and let your hand move without judgment.
Color your feelings: Try drawing a "feelings heart" using colors to represent how you are feeling right now.
Color in memory: Create a picture in honor of a loved one who has passed.
Donate used crayons: Support organizations like The Crayon Initiative or Crayon Collection, which turn old crayons into new ones for children in hospitals.
Let’s fill the world with color, even when our own worlds feel gray.

Because we have been a part of this community for over 150 years, we understand the immense value of heritage. That is why we believe supporting local history—and teaching it to future generations—is vital to the spirit of Meridian.
We are proud to highlight one of our community’s greatest treasures: Merrehope.
Just like Webb & Stephens, Merrehope is a survivor. Having withstood the trials of the Civil War, this magnificent Greek Revival home represents the resilience of our city. It stands as a physical testament to the memories of days gone by, offering a glimpse into our shared, unfolding story.
Teaching our children and neighbors about landmarks like Merrehope ensures that our unique history is not forgotten. It connects us to the shoulders we stand on and strengthens our community bonds.
We encourage you to visit, explore, and support the Merrehope home. Let’s protect the places that make Meridian special.

Come One, Come All to Merrehope!
Help us build the “We’re In This Together” Community Chain by creating a paper chain as tall as you are and adding it to our growing chain of community support.
👏 Special thanks to Tyler Harrell, Amanda Carney, and Katelyn Tomberlin with Webb & Stephens Funeral Homes for adding 199 inches to the chain!
Every link supports Merrehope and helps keep it a place of learning and inspiration for generations to come.

Phyllis Myrle Brock

Services for Mrs. Phyllis Brock will be held Monday, March 2, 2026, 11:00 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church of Meridian with Pastor Bo Kyle officiating. Visitation will be held an hour prior to service at the church. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, 11:00 a.m. at Ipava Cemetery in Ipava, IL, which will be conducted by Shawgo Memorial Home. Webb & Stephens Funeral Homes are honored to be entrusted with arrangements.

Phyllis Myrle Brock, 87, passed away peacefully at her home on February 15, 2026. She was born on July 19, 1938, at St. Francis Hospital in Macomb, Illinois, to Phillip and Mary Katherine Howell. She grew up on a farm in Ipava, Illinois, where she learned the value of hard work, faith, and family. She often shared stories of farm life with her children and grandchildren, keeping those early memories alive for generations.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Larry Brock, who passed away in February 2016. Their marriage reflected devotion, steadiness, and enduring love. After retirement, Phyllis and Larry made their home in Meridian, Mississippi, where they enjoyed meeting new friends through their church family and cherished traveling to visit loved ones in this new season of life. Phyllis was a devoted mother to her children: Kathy Flynn (Mark), Angela Schaffer (Tim), Todd Brock, and Phyllis Harper (Dennis). Her greatest joy was her growing family, and she was a proud and loving grandmother to Stephanie Meyer (Stephen), Alexandra James (Steven), Parker Brock (Claire), Brittney Chaney (Brock), and Chasity McGraw (Jason). She was especially proud of her great-grandchildren: Christian, Gwennyth, and Benjamin Meyer; Audrey and Emerson James; Turner Brock; Hattie, John Brock, and Henry Chaney; and Lake, Lowry, and Mary Lawrence McGraw. She treasured watching them grow and found great happiness in attending their sports, activities, and performances, always cheering them on with quiet pride.

She also loved gathering around the table for card and board games, where laughter and friendly competition were always welcome. Many treasured family memories were made in those simple moments together. She had a soft heart for her pets and cared for them as part of the family.

She is also survived by her sisters, Theresa Keefauver (Rodney), Michelle Wherley (Denney), and Charlotte Reynolds (Ron), along with a host of nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.

She shared a close bond with her sister-in-law and best friend, Jan Brock. Their friendship was marked by loyalty, laughter, and years of shared memories.

Phyllis was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church in Meridian, Mississippi. Her trust in the Lord guided her throughout her life. She was also a devoted Duke Basketball fan who loved cheering on her Blue Devils. Watching a game was one of her simple pleasures.

Phyllis leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, strength, and quiet perseverance. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who were blessed to know her. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Meridian, Mississippi, or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
