📢 Important Update for Families with Minor Clients

At Family Counseling Services, we want to keep our community informed about changes that may impact your care.

Due to a new Idaho law, Idaho House Bill 822 (effective July 1, 2026), there are updated requirements around confidentiality and parent communication when working with minors.

What this means in simple terms:
• In certain situations, therapists are required to notify parents/guardians within 72 hours
• This includes disclosures related to gender identity or requests for social transition (such as name/pronoun changes or use of gender-specific spaces)
• In these cases, confidentiality cannot be maintained, even if a minor requests it

Additionally:
• Parent/guardian consent is required before providers can support certain transition-related requests in treatment

Our approach at FCS:
We remain committed to:
✔ Being transparent about confidentiality from the start
✔ Supporting minors in navigating conversations with parents
✔ Providing respectful, professional, and nonjudgmental care
✔ Walking alongside both clients and families through sensitive topics

We understand this is a complex and personal area. Our goal is to balance legal requirements with compassionate care for every family we serve.

If you have questions about how this may impact services, please reach out to your provider or contact our office.

🌾 Idaho Drought Emergency – What You Should Know

All 44 counties across Idaho are now under an official emergency drought declaration, approved by the Idaho Department of Water Resources and Governor Brad Little.

This impacts communities across the state and may bring added stress for families, farmers, and individuals navigating uncertainty.

💧 A bit of hope: A storm system moving in late Tuesday (April 21) is expected to bring significant rain Wednesday and Thursday, which could help ease conditions.

At Family Counseling Services, we recognize that environmental stressors like drought can affect mental health, daily routines, and overall well-being. If you or your family are feeling the impact, support is available.

📺 Stay informed by watching coverage from Idaho News 6, and take steps to care for both your physical and emotional health during this time.

💙 We’re here for you.

Ride Again: Reuse Program Gives Bikes a Second Life

MERIDIAN – Residents can now apply for a refurbished bike through Meridian’s Recycle a Bicycle Program. The City of Meridian’s Solid Waste Advisory Commission (SWAC) and Republic Services collaborate to connect bicycles with those who lack access to one, including children, students, and veterans. Republic Services receives hundreds of bicycles at the Meridian Transfer Station each year. This program keeps repairable bicycles circulating within our community and out of the landfill.

“Finding effective and creative ways to divert waste from our landfill is a priority for our commission,” said SWAC Chair, Steve Cory. “Recycle a Bicycle continues to do this in a way that makes a difference for members of our community.”

Republic Services, Rachele Klein, added, “We’ve enjoyed watching this program thrive through the years. We’re incredibly grateful to our volunteers who make this possible and provide these repurposed bikes to our community.”

The program is free; requests must be submitted by 2 p.m. on Friday, May 1. Applicants will be fitted with an appropriate bike based on needs while supplies last. Parents of minors will need to complete the request form and accompany their child to pick up their bike. To apply, visit the Recycle a Bicycle page.

Those able to be matched with an appropriate bike will be notified by Republic Services and given instructions on when the bike is ready to be picked up at the Meridian Transfer Station (2130 W Franklin Rd.). Republic Services and SWAC will have extra bikes at the Meridian Parks and Recreation’s Explore Outdoors Bicycle Bonanza event on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Discovery Park (2121 E Lake Hazel Road). These bikes are available on a first-come, first-served basis for families who would like a bike but did not apply online.

💛 We’re honored—but more than anything, we’re grateful.

Family Counseling Services was recently recognized as a Top 5 Mental Health Provider in Meridian for 2026, based on client reviews.

And while that’s meaningful… what matters most to us is what’s behind those reviews.

Each one represents a real person who showed up, opened up, and trusted us with their story.

That’s something we never take lightly.

If you’ve ever walked through our doors (or joined us via telehealth), thank you for allowing us to be part of your healing and growth.
