Green beans for mom and dad, and green beans for baby! I am a big fan of work smarter, not harder! Homemade baby food doesn't have to be a production. Feed baby what you eat.
I picked up fresh green beans for dinner and steamed them. Half went into a saute pan with butter, almonds, and garlic (yum!) And the other half went into my Nutribullet with splashes of coconut oil and meat stock for baby! Simple and nutritious for everyone.

Hi all! We took a bit of a hiatus over here at All American Speech Therapy because we welcomed our newest family member several months ago! Baby girl is doing wonderfully and Kathy is getting ready to get back to helping families with their speech, language and feeding needs!

We have exciting things brewing over here and can't wait to share them with you all! Stay tuned!

Take some time this week off of your screen! Screens include cell phones, iPads, tablets, and televisions.

It can be easy to get suckered into our screens for way longer than we intended. We zone out and and exhaust our minds. This can be particularly problematic for young, developing minds, and even older minds that are recovering from neurological injury.

I always recommended trying to find activities that can be done away from our screens. These activities help regulate our social-emotional well being as well as speech-language-social development and rehabilitation.

Like and comment below if you completed any of these activities this week!

Speech pathologists work very closely with audiologists when caring for our patients' communication needs! But what does an audiologist do, and do you need to see one?

- They provide care in the prevention, identification, diagnosis, and treatment of hearing, balance, and other auditory disorders for people of all ages
- They perform hearing screenings and audiological evaluations to identify hearing loss
-They can recommend and adjust hearing aids

I remember have sudden onset of hearing loss while working in the hospital one day. I was typing at a computer in the middle of the very loud nurses station, and then there is was! It was hardly noticeable but it was there. All of a sudden I couldn't hear someone talking to the left of me as well as to the right of me. We had an audiologist in the hospital who happily checked my hearing and identified a slight hearing loss in my left ear! It wasn't just in my head.

I luckily got an appointment with an ENT the next day to further assess the cause of the hearing loss. I was prescribed a short course of steroids which luckily resolved my hearing problems. I was so thankful for my friend the audiologist who quickly identified my issue and recommended seeing an ENT!

If you suspect you or a loved one is having hearing loss, seek an ENT or audiologist evaluation ASAP!

Good hearing is paramount for the development of speech and language skills in young children and for maintaining communication skills in adults!

Happy Better Hearing and Speech Month! The theme that we are highlighting this year is "Connecting People."

The importance of human connection, and what can happen when we are isolated from one another, has really been highlighted these past two years.

On the surface speech pathologists help children with their lisps or how to pronounce certain sounds.

But below the surface, we are helping children communicate and socialize with their peers and adults so they can make human connection. We are helping adults who have suffered neurological injuries communicate and connect with their loved ones again. We help children and adults be apart of mealtime again.

There are few things more precious than the bonds that tie us all together, and I always feel honored to be part of a family's story which helps them on the path to recovery.

This month I will be posting about the role of the speech pathologist, and the variety of services they offer in different settings.

Got a topic you would like more information about? Feel free to comment below or DM me and I will post about it!

"Picky Eating" is more complex than most people think! When children are demonstrating behaviors at mealtime like spitting or throwing foods, or only wanting the mac and cheese from the blue box not the green box... they are not doing this to be difficult. They are doing this because they are trying to communicate something to us, and it is our job to figure out what that is.

They are trying to say, "this food upsets my stomach so I am going to throw it" or "I have a hard time chewing and this food is too hard, so instead I will spit it out and throw it on the floor." Children communicate to us through their behaviors and it is our job to figure out why.

If your child is demonstrating picky eating behaviors that are disruptive to mealtime, you can consult with a speech language pathologist to help you put the pieces of the puzzle together.

At All American Speech Therapy, we address picky eating behaviors and their underlying etiologies. DM or comment for more information!

Got a picky eater in your home? One of my favorite things to do with these kids is geting them into the kitchen and involved in the process! Depending on their age, your child might just be watching you, they can dump ingredients into a bowl, they can stir, they can fetch things from a cabinet...the possibilities are endless!

1. Most picky eaters have some level of anxiety with foods. They do not trust that what they eat will be enjoyable or familiar, so they turn it down. Maybe they have been tricked in the past and told it's "just spaghetti" when really it was "just spaghetti with small bites of broccoli hidden in the tomato sauce." When they are involved in the kitchen and see how the food is being created, they can relax knowing there's no sneaky mystery ingredients going into their meal.

2. Before a child can eat a new food, they typically need to get comfortable with it in other ways - they need to be OK with seeing the food, smelling it, touching it, mixing it with a spoon, scooping it into a bowl. Cooking is a natural and functional way to practice all of these skills!

3. How many times gas your picky eater said "yuck, I am not eating that!" In response to what is for dinner. Ok, well what if we responded "you don't have to eat it, but help me make it! This will be a snack for me/your brother/grandma." Your child will think "Oh ok! I don't have to eat it? Great! Now I can just focus on having fun!"

4. Kids love structure and being in charge. So many times a day, choices are made for them. Wear this, go here, eat that, sleep now. So when they are given a chance to take control they love it! "Should we add the peanut butter or jelly first?" "Should we add yellow or white cheese?"

Christos Anesti! Christ Has Risen! Happy Easter to all those who celebrate today!

A bit about me- I was born and raised into the Greek Orthodox faith!

Easter concludes Holy Week, which is one of the most beautiful and important times during the year for our faith. If anyone is curious about what goes on in a Greek Orthodox Church during Holy Week, I would be more than happy to share!

I will be celebrating with my family, cooking and eating all the delicious things (including lamb!) Greeks traditionally cook lamb on Easter and crack red eggs!

Some quick tips on communicating with individuals with aphasia!

❇ feels like a no brainer, but make sure you have the person's attention before you start speaking! Processing language is difficult for individuals with aphasia - if their attention is divided due to background noise or because they didn't realize you were speaking with them, it can lead to frustration for both parties involved and an unsuccessful communication attempt!

❇ keeping communication simple does not mean dumbing down the message, or using child-like words. You can simplify your message and make it more easy to understand by saying it slower WITHOUT dumbing it down. Think of how you explain a technical aspect of your job to another adult who works in an unrelated field.

❇ because processing and comprehension of language is more difficult for people with aphasia, they need more time to hear what you said, understand it, and then think of a way to respond back.

❇ take a beat after every few sentences and confirm with the person with aphasia if they have understood you or not. They may need you to repeat it or rephrase. But you'll never know if you don't ask.

❇ pictures and gestures can be worth 1000 spoken words. If the person with aphasia looks lost with what you are trying to say, use Google Image search on your phone, computer or tablet and show them pictures to help piece together your message!

Let's talk about Aphasia on today's "Talk About It Tuesday" !

Bruce Willis has been all over the headlines lately - he is retiring from acting due to a recent diagnosis of aphasia.

Aphasia is an acquired language disorder which affects a person's communication - specifically their ability to understand and express language, as well as their reading and writing skills. This is not something you are born with, or something you can "catch." Aphasia is a symptom of another neurological diagnosis - such as a stroke, a brain injury, a brain tumor or progressive neurological disease. The symptoms can be gradual or they can be sudden.

If you or a loved one are suffering from any changes in your ability to comprehend or express language, DO NOT WAIT! Call your primary care doctor or neurologist ASAP for advice on next steps. It is imperative to know what the cause of the aphasia before seeking assistance from a speech language pathologist.

Working with patients with aphasia is very near and dear to my heart. I will be posting about this topic all week!

Do you have any experience with aphasia? What is something you would like to learn? Like and comment below!

Practice DOES NOT make perfect ... rather "Practice makes permanent."

Here is an example - shooting this basketball is very difficult, so I will keep practicing until it gets better.

But what if the way you are practicing is wrong? If you keep practicing with incorrect form, the basket will never go in! And now after all of that practice, you have learned improper form that you will have to "unlearn"if you ever hope to "relearn" a more successful way to shoot the basketball!

This is due to neuroplasticity, which is the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections through life. When we practice something, our brain builds neural pathways. Our brains are always rewiring themselves as they learn new information!

Let's talk about our children with speech, language and feeding difficulties.  Unfortunately we cannot rely on "time heals all" and "just keep practicing until it gets better." The basic foundations of neuroplasticity do not support this. Every deficit needs a specific intervention. And we have to monitor very closely how our children respond to our interventions.  Are they improving? Are they getting more frustrated? Perhaps they can't verbally tell us but are they showing us subtle (or not so subtle!) behavioral signs?

We must always be mindful of what we are practicing with our children, how we are practicing, and what outcome we are hoping to achieve!
