Once size, strength and speed have stabilized among competitors the significance of the mental side of the game becomes paramount. The consistent performance by an athlete such as Jacob deGrom is explained by superior mental skills rather then a physical advantage he may have over his peers.

Rapid heart rate, feeling nervous/fearful, sweating, restlessness, shaking, and possibly even chest pain.. all symptoms of anxiety. It’s the body’s natural flight or fight response. Diaphragmatic breathing or abdominal breathing is something you can do anywhere at anytime to combat these symptoms.
Diaphragmatic breathing is simple to do but requires practice. Sit with your feet flat on the floor or lay down, place a hand on your abdomen, take a SLOW breath in through your nose while you raise your abdomen. Hold in the air, count to 3 and release the air slowly through pursed lips imagining a balloon 🎈 slowly deflating. Repeat several times. When done correctly you are actually activating the relaxation response of parasympathetic nervous system.
Besides the obvious psychological advantages of managing your anxiety, athletes who practice this like Kobe Bryant (📷 NBA Taiwan) know that this type of breathing can elevate performance. Some of the proven benefits are enhanced speed, timing, increased stamina and endurance, sharper focus and concentration
and faster decision making. .

Flow.. and I’m not talking about his hair. I’m talking about what psychologist call being in the zone.. being dialed in -athletes can perform at their full potential when they are in the zone. The rest of the world seems to fade to the background. Athletes that are in the zone are fully engaged in the game. They aren’t plagued by distractions from negative self talk, or anxiety including shortness of breathe, rapid heart rate, or sweaty palms. They have no fear. They feel invincible. They are laser focused.

But how do they get there? Learning and practicing mindfulness is one way to get athletes to reach their full potential.

When Conor McGregor (📷 credit) says something is going to happen it does.. thats because as a child in 🇮🇪 Ireland, long before he knew what the law of attraction and visualization, was he was practicing them. He remembers playing soccer and vividly imagining playing in the World Cup on the Ireland national team or scoring a winning goal for the Manchester United. When he was a fighter in Ireland’s cage circuit, he imagined himself not only a part of the UFC but as a champion. Long before a fight, McGregor has fought that fight vividly in his head countless times. From his entrance to the arena to knockout 🍀
In McGregor's own words “It is the Law of Attraction and it is the most powerful thing in the world. It is the belief that you are able to create whatever situation that you want for yourself and no one can take it from you. It is believing something is already yours, and then doing whatever you have to so that it comes true.”

She’s cute alright but not quite big enough for these goalie pads... but soon enough she will get her own pair or maybe a softball 🥎 glove or tennis 🎾 racquet or soccer ⚽️ cleats. Whatever sport it is, she will be supported because there is a positive correlation between girls that play sports and increased confidence, body image, academic achievement, and personal relationships. Sports is a win for girls both on and off the field. .

The ump says PLAY BALL.. the 11 year old gets up to bat. What should he be thinking? He should be thinking he’s going to make it to the majors. He should be picturing himself with his hand on his heart about to play in his first world series. Extraordinary people live their lives backwards. It all starts with a dream. They create a vision and are determined to make that their reality by putting in hard work, dedication, and commitment. A powerful tool to help motivation, in work or sports performance, is to set goals. Goals need to be SMART : Specific, Measurable, Attainable , Realistic and Timely.

Many great athletes recognize the power of visualization. Visualization involves imagining your performance in an activity such as running a race, giving a speech, or performing a dance flawlessly. With this mental rehearsal you program your subconscious to move toward success. Research indicates that athletes who practice visualization outperform others of equal talent and ability. In your “mental dress rehearsal” focus on every detail, dominate your opponent, and help ensure victory

The law of dominant thought states that our actions follow our thoughts and images.. we remember our most dominant thought whether it be positive or negative. If an athlete is thinking “don’t miss the net” , or “don’t miss the pass” this is more likely to happen. You end up doing whatever you think most often. If you want a mental edge tell your mind what you want it to do rather then what not to do..you are what you think 🤔
