Alright, let’s talk about the taboo… Steroids.
First, there are different types of steroids - Corticosteroids are used for medical purposes like minimizing inflammation and controlling allergic reactions.
The other are called Anabolic androgenic steroids - as known as “hormone therapy,” “performance enhancing drugs,” and “gear.”
Did you know that roughly 15% of gym goers are using anabolic steroids?
There are many risks and benefits to using gear. Obviously, the short term benefits are increases muscle mass and fat loss in shorter time with less work. It also produces a permanent effect on muscle tissue such that the user has a higher potential for muscle growth for the rest of their life.
The risks, however are much more serious - the number one being a shorter life span due to higher possibility of developing coronary heart disease, heart attack & stroke. Some other negative effects are developing acne, deeper voice, low s***m count, infertility, blood clots, liver damage, tumors, cysts and gynecomastia and aggressive and depressive behavior. Not only that, but I feel use of steroids can be mentally addicting as the user’s identity is based on his/her outward appearance.
So, is the “fitness industry” really all about “Health & Fitness?” Depends who you’re asking…
