Mesquite NSA Kids Twist Stuttering Support Group for kids, teens and their families (Note: Parents must remain at the meeting with their child.

Meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month 7:00 pm at the Mesquite/Sunnyvale Special Education - Student Support Center, 714 East Kimbrough Street, Mesquite, TX 75149. To RSVP for the group meeting contact Lana Dodgen, ldodgen@mesquiteisd.org or Karin Manchack, kmanchack@mesquiteisd.org. Last night we had our November Family chapter meeting and what a success! We had 25 people total and the topic was "Stuttering Disclosure - What does it look like and who does it best?" Many new faces and several repeat customers! We explained what disclosure was, showed Nate's video, and then divided into two groups - parents and children. Both groups practiced a simple disclosure. "Hi I am [insert name] and I am a person who stutters. Besides stuttering I am also....." or "Hello, i am [insert family member name], I have a child, brother, sister, cousin who stutters. They are also awesome at....etc."

Then when the groups came back together we had children volunteer to disclose to the group, and one by one they did! It was so great! There was a lot of sharing, some tears, lots of support provided from parents to parents and the kids really seemed to shine! We closed with a Rock, Paper, Scissor challenge that had everyone laughing. Best meeting in a long time.

We had 4 families at our October meeting last night! Three new families and one repeat customer!!!! It was so great! Our topic was “Effective Communication vs. Fluent Speech-What is your goal?” We were able to share things we learned from the NSA Conference this summer which generated great discussion with the parents. We also had fun pumpkin 🎃 carving with the kids. They talked about what they liked/didn’t like about therapy! Our one teen helped the littles with carving. Can’t wait for our next meeting! Happy fall y’all.
