Sometimes warmth really is the best medicine, especially when you're out on the parade route in the freezing cold (or at least too cold for your muscles to feel tight and painful to move). When your muscles feel like screaming, using a hot compress or heating pad to loosen up those aching joints! Heat helps aching muscles relax, increases blood flow, and eases stiffness!

Something you can do while sitting in those flimsy lawn chairs is gently massage the areas of pain. By targeting tight muscles and areas of stress, therapeutic massage reduces pain, increases mobility, and promotes deep relaxation, making it an essential part of maintaining long-term physical and emotional well-being.

Take advantage of our Massage Special for the month! When you buy one 75-minute massage, you'll get the second one for half off! The point of a therapeutic massage is to help you recover from seasonal stress, ease muscle tension, and support your ongoing care.

Offer available through January 31 and don’t expire! Call TODAY (504-407-3477) to claim your BOGO before the deadline January 31.

Peripheral neuropathy can disrupt everyday life by causing tingling, numbness, burning, or weakness in the hands and feet. Understanding the condition is the first step toward managing symptoms, improving comfort, and protecting long-term nerve health. If you’re experiencing persistent nerve-related discomfort, early attention and informed care can make a meaningful difference.

Living with peripheral neuropathy can be frustrating, but you’re not alone, and you’re definitely not powerless. Paying attention to symptoms, taking care of your overall health, and getting the right guidance can help you regain comfort and confidence. With the right approach, those unruly nerves can quiet down, letting you get back to walking, sleeping, and living without constantly thinking about what your feet (or hands) are up to today.

Vagus nerve stimulation can involve a few different methods, in which a licensed professional would use a device that sends electrical energy to the brainstem, through your vagus nerve.

STIMPOD could help the vagus nerve by delivering noninvasive electrical stimulation that enhances vagal tone and supports healthy nerve signaling. This stimulation can help regulate the autonomic nervous system, promoting a better balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic activity. By activating the vagus nerve, STIMPOD may reduce inflammation through the body’s natural anti-inflammatory pathways. Improved vagal function can also support heart rate variability, digestion, and stress regulation. Over time, this neuromodulation may contribute to reduced pain, improved relaxation, and better overall nervous system health.

The vagus nerve can affect the body physically in 3 key areas:

1️⃣ The vagus nerve aids in regulating our heart rate and blood pressure. "High vagal tone is associated with a lower resting heart rate, reduced blood pressure, and increased heart rate variability (HRV), which is the variation in time between heartbeats."

2️⃣ The vagus nerve promotes proper digestive function, meant to regulate "the release of digestive enzymes, gastric acid, and bile," while also controlling contractions of the stomach and intestines (to help move food through the digestive tract).

3️⃣ The vagus nerve helps to regulate excessive inflammation, and support healing through fighting off infections.

Our vagus nerve plays a critical part in our 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺, or ANS. This component helps to regulate "𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀," such as our heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗡𝗦 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀:
the 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 (increasing our heart rate and redirecting blood flow to the muscles to prepare our bodies for a "fight or flight" response), and the 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 (associated with the "rest and digest" response, helping our body to relax, digest properly, and recover smoothly).

The vagus nerve resides in our brainstem, and extends downwards through our neck, and into our chest and abdomen. This single nerve branches out towards various organs: the stomach, spleen, intestines, kidneys, heart, lungs, and the liver.

This nerve is am important component of our autonomic nervous system, which we will go over later in the week.

The Cleveland Clinic mentions how the vagus nerve plays an important role in our sensory and motor functions, such as our digestive health, our heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, immune responses, our general mood, speech, and so much more.

At Tandem Physical Therapy we specialize in helping active adults in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s stay mobile and healthy for years to come without relying on medications or making repeated trips to the doctor. In our physical therapy practice we use a skillful “hands on” approach as the cornerstone of our practice and incorporate specialized exercises to fix painful movement compensations. We are fully dedicated to understanding your concerns and aligning our treatments to match your goals. We also offer weekly Pilates-based exercise classes to keep our patients and community strong and healthy.

We know what it takes to get you better.

Our years of experience have shown us what it takes to get a successful outcome. Our physical therapy model offers the highest quality of care available. This means more time with your physical therapist providing interventions to get you where you want to be faster.

We also believe in time spent to help you understand what is causing your problem and what needs to happen to fix it.
