InterACT NOLA

InterACT NOLA A traveling theatre troupe inclusive of people with and without disabilities. "Changing perceptions through art & expression."

Since 2012, InterACT NOLA’s mission to create art that challenges perceptions of disability has opened doors for artists with disabilities and audiences eager to experience their work, who might never have seen the arts as an option, but who now see the arts as essential to their humanity. With over 30 artists, InterACT NOLA is multi-cultural, intergenerational, and embraces the entire spectrum of disability labels. InterACT NOLA’s work is driven by a vision of inclusion. We collaborate with artists with and without disabilities, from mainstream and marginalized communities, whose stories and life experiences are the foundation for our original, ensemble-generated theatrical work. InterACT NOLA is the first performing arts organization for artists with disabilities in Louisiana. InterACT NOLA’s driving vision of inclusion recognizes the fact that people with disabilities are uniquely creative and talented, but are often locked into failure situations because their creativity is ignored, discouraged, or considered inappropriate. InterACT NOLA’s mission challenges that perception. We are leaders in developing an inclusive creative environment, producing work that blurs the boundaries between who “can” and who “cannot”. InterACT spans the spectrum to include artists on the autism spectrum, artists with Down syndrome, and every label in between.

BRAVO InterACTORS! InterACT NOLA has taken a new path this year with their Community Outreach Project in a new collaboration with Louisiana Special Olympics. A new anti-bullying mini show "Spread The Word To End The Word" has been touring schools addressing the issues of bullying and the use of hurtful words especially to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Spread the Word to End the Word is a United States national campaign to encourage people to pledge to stop using the word re**rd.

If you want this show at your school, please contact Valerie at 504-897-0134.

4th and final show this Friday night in Covington at the Greater Covington Civic Center (Furman Theater) @ 7:30pm. Doors open at 7pm. PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH YOUR FB FRIENDS!

Living on a String is an original, ensemble-generated theatrical work created by the InterACT NOLA artists, both with and without disabilities. Exploring the theme of manipulation through physical movement and character studies, the actors challenged their range of capabilities physically, emotionally and intellectually. We asked the questions: How do we manipulate others and how are we manipulated in relationships and social situations? How do we manipulate our bodies to communicate?
We chose the setting of Northeastern Brazil near Receife and Olinda just days before Carnaval because the spirit Carnaval manipulates you into transcending your daily existence by casting away your worries to see new beginnings...a new year, a new love or even just a new day. The actors participated in drumming and dance workshops with Casa Samba and studied the tradition of Frevo dancing and the Blocos of Carnaval. They have worked tirelessly and collaboratively while encouraging and supporting one another to write songs, create character and scenes, and choreograph their musical numbers. They discovered by facing your greatest fear, you become stronger and more alive.
And none of this would have been possible without the vision of Valerie St. Amant whose dream it was to bring the opportunity of musical theatre to these artists and the unparalleled support of the Arc of Greater New Orleans. The arts are essential to our humanity and I am honored to have witnessed the spark of creativity light up this incredible ensemble. The actor is the athlete of the heart and our actors are true Olympians!
