Are "you" working at home? If so, it can take a toll on one's health. Some will feel more tired and less motivated to exercise & eat well ---- even though there is more time. So, what should we be focusing on to stay healthy while ordered to be in our homes? There are ways one can weave wellness into our daily activities (as per Dr. Elizabeth Cozine at Mayo Clinic).1st - get a good night's sleep! Go to bed around the same time every night - then allow yourself a full 7 to 9 hours of sleep, which is the amount most adults need. Next: exercise! it is a crucial part of staying healthy - especially during stressful times. A full-body workout is not needed - but consider taking a walk or riding a bike--yes all while continuing to follow social distancing guidelines. Dust off that exercise equipment and hop on! And online exercise programs are free and give us the opportunity to try something new. Finally, maintaining a healthy diet is very important-- always, but even more so during the "stay at home" mandate. These tips will definitely help all to stay healthy - Let's all pay attention!

SLEEP HYGIENE - PRESCRIBED HABITS TO HELP US ALL SLEEP WELL.
1. KEEP IT DARK - Dim overhead lights, use blackout curtains
to block moonlight or street lamps, keep digital devices more than an arm's length away (to you aren't tempted to look at them when you wake up in the middle of the night). 2. Keep it cool! Lower the thermostat at night to between 60 & 67 degrees. 3. Keep it quiet (calm!) Silence is not essential but it is necessary for noises to be predictable. Humidifers and fans can be helpful or a white noise machine. 4. Put electronic screens away! the blue light they emit can delay your ability to fall asleep and can cause you to wake up inn the middle of the night. 5. Limit caffeine, alcohol & some foods. Try cutting off any caffeine around 2 PM for a 10 PM bed time. Alcohol - limit evening imbibing to a single drink. Also, rich or spicy foods trigger indigestion, making it difficult to fall asleep or causing you to wake up in the middle of the night. 6. Exercise - getting moderate exercise on a regular basis can make it
easier to fall asleep and get a better quality rest.
Experts say preparing for bed is somewhat like "landing a plane" : a half-hour or hour long bedtime routine can help you "make your descent"! Sleep - essential to good health - if any are having problems, do try these recommended remedies.

SEA SALT vs. TABLE SALT
NO--Sea Salt is no healthier than regular table salt! The difference between sea salt and table salt is in the processing, taste and texture. Sea Salt is made through the evaporation of seawater. Table Salt is mined from underground salt deposits. Both contain sodium and chloride and both can affect your blood pressure. For home cooking, sea salt can be a better choice if you enjoy the taste or you find you use less because of the larger crystals.
Health experts recommend limiting sodium intake to less than 2,300 mg a day, or to 1,500 mg if age 51 or older, African- American or have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease. Consume all salt in moderation, regardless of what type of salt it is!

CELLULITIS -- WHAT IS IT AND HOW SERIOUS? Cellulitis is a condition that occurs when bacteria find a way into the deeper layers of the skin and layers of fat just beneath them, causing a spreading infection. (not related to cellulite, a term for areas of skin that appear lumpy or dimpled due to subcutaneous fat distribution.) Cellulitis can occur anywhere, it is most often seen on the legs and feet with symptoms of red, tender skin, sometimes swelling with local warmth and pain, all signs of inflammation. Although cellulitis can occur in anyone, risk factors include a weakened immune system, IV drug use and diabetes.
Cellulitis is fairly common and potentially serious because if left untreated, the infection can spread to the lymph nodes, bloodstream and deeper tissues of the body.
Treatment: consists of antibiotics plus measures to reduce swelling and also to increase circulation i.e.compression and elevation for the swelling and cool compresses, which can help relieve pain and itching. Always finish the entire course of antibiotics, keep skin clean and well-moisturized. If signs of a recurrence flare up, see your family doctor asap.

Happy New Year - the holidays are over and the steady stream of cookies and treats has slowed down - but for many of us, the appetite for high-fat, sodium-laden sweets continues. Making the switch from highy processed junk food to healthier whole foods can be a challenge, but some easy changes will be very helpful. We are all creatures of habit, but yes, the good news is habits can be broken even though it can be a challenge. To help us all, - a plan is extremely helpful - nothing difficult - just sensible. Following are 3 tips to get us started:
1. Remove temptation! Instead of having the chips and dip on the counter, a bowl of fruit - in small bits, works well.
2. Try gradually cutting back and pairing your favorites with a new food. Eat less of that ice cream and other sweet desert, replace with prepared, cut up fruit.
3. Another replacement - the sweet candy and cookies that we love, yes have one, but include a piece of that fresh fruit (that is in the bowl!)l.
Test and experiment - it can be fun and you will find new tastes to tickle your taste buds! Let's all work on being healthier in 2019!

Holiday Stress - can lead to overeating! Here are some tips to break the habits: 1. DON'T FORGET TO EXCERCISE! It does help reduce stress and keeps the immune system at a higher level at this time of the year. Having an excercise buddy is very helpful! 2. GET YOUR REST! Great decisions are not made when you are tired and many of those decisions include what to put in your mouth! 3. WHAT YOU DRINK MATTERS! Alcohol can lower inhibitions about overeating- also, the drinks can pack a lot of calories (eggnog - 500 or 600 calories in 1 cup!) 4. DON'T EAT LESS; EAT SMARTER! A good idea: before the party - have your breakfast, lunch and a light snack, plus bring some healthy food to the gathering so your hunger is satisfied - then you can eat enough of the party food to enjoy it without turning it into a feeding frenzy! Following these "tips" will definitely help your enjoyment of the holiday season,

Exaggerated claims? The claims that cold-brew coffee will cause less heartburn and is healthier than hot brew may be exaggerated. The claims have been put to the test to investigate the acidity and antioxidant activity of the cold brew. The report was published in Scientific Reports with the researchers reporting that the pH levels of both brews were similar however the hot coffee had more beneficial antioxidants. What should coffee drinkers do? The final answer was remember cold brew does not have preservatives and cannot be stored in the refrigerator as long as the hot brew coffee. But basically the answer was, enjoy what you have been enjoying.
