During one of our classes, two caregivers were chatting about signing up for our next session of classes. The two friends agreed they were signing up again (yay!) and we overheard one of them say to the other “I don’t just sign up for [child’s name], I also sign up for ME!” When you join us at Backyartists, your children gain so much more than just art skills - they’re building fine motor coordination, turn taking, patience, and problem solving tools, and so much more, but it’s also a special place where adults build community with others who are raising and taking care of young children. We love how much fun everyone has when they come to Backyartists classes, kids and grown ups too, and we can’t wait for you to join us this Spring!

Our Sensory Fun Classes for kids 18 months through 5 years and Afternoon Art Explorers Classes for children in Kindergarten through 2nd Grades still have limited spaces available!

Our Spring Sessions run April 29th through June 18th (7 or 8 weeks, depending on the day of the week you choose). Please note, there will be NO CLASS Tuesday, June 2nd.

Our Afternoon Art Explorers created cardboard stars this week. They used fine motor skills to trace stars onto thin sheets of cardboard and then cut out their stars with scissors. They then added designs and color using acrylic paint markers. Some children chose to add string to hang their stars and others chose to turn them into magic wands. We love seeing the concentration, thoughtfulness, and care that the children put into their work!

Our stations in Sensory Fun (18 months - 5 years) classes this week were inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night. Children created nighttime play dough scenes on silver mats, scooped and poured dark blue rice with star scoopers, and used star cookie cutters to create star prints.

Our Spring session begins the week of April 28th and runs through the week of June 18th. To sign up for the next session: https://www.backyartists.com/art-classes-playgroup

⭐️ Messy Minis (6-18 months) ⭐️ The group of kiddos at this Friday’s Messy Minis group enjoyed splashing together in the water, stacking colorful pegs on the light table and checking out the big jugs of paint… we might need to try out some painting next week 🤔

During our Claude Monet-inspired week, we explored lily pads through a variety of stations. We scooped and poured water onto lily pads, painted coffee filter lily pads with liquid watercolors, and squished blue (water) kinetic sand onto foam lily pads. We also discussed the life cycle of a frog and played with figures representing each stage.

The Wednesday Afternoon Art Explorers enjoyed creating their own woven tapestries yesterday. They learned how to bring their string across in an over/under pattern to create each row. They also enjoyed mixing different colors, textures, and thicknesses of yarn. This was a great fine motor challenge, and one where they really focused and persevered!

You asked for more adult nights, so we delivered!!

Gelli plate printing, using a silicone plate and acrylic paint, is a versatile and beginner-friendly printmaking technique that allows you to quickly create a variety of captivating textures and patterns. During this hands-on workshop, you’ll have time to play, experiment, and create dozens of prints for your collage stash.

We’ll cover numerous mark-making techniques using stencils, stamps, botanical materials, and everyday items to produce a collection of inspiring prints to fuel (or kickstart!) your collage practice.

No prior experience necessary. All materials provided, but please bring your own smock. A large t-shirt over your clothes can work perfectly.

We’ll supply light snacks and seltzers, but feel free to byob! Wine is welcome.
