The Metter College & Career Academy (MCCA) is proud to announce the donation of a new Automated External Defibrillator (AED) from Candler County Hospital.
Marty Ray, CEO of the hospital, and Dr. Jason Glow, Medical Director for Candler County Schools in partnership with Candler County Hospital, presented the AED to school nurses and district administration in a small ceremony, attended by Mrs. Cindi Jarrell’s Health Sciences class.
An AED is a life-saving device used to treat sudden cardiac arrest by delivering an electric shock to help restore a normal heart rhythm. Having an AED on site significantly increases the chances of survival in cardiac emergencies, making it an essential tool in school safety.
“We are extremely grateful to Candler County Hospital for this generous donation,” said Mrs. Brittany Hendrix, Nurse at Metter K8 Complex. “This AED enhances the safety of our students and staff, and provides a valuable learning opportunity for our Allied Health students to understand the importance of emergency preparedness.”
This donation reflects the hospital’s ongoing commitment to the health and well-being of the local community and strengthens even further the partnership between healthcare providers and the schools in Candler County.
A portion of that partnership involves students at Metter High School and Metter College & Career Academy having the unique opportunity through the Allied Health Program to shadow professionals at Candler County Hospital. Over multiple days, students rotate through a variety of healthcare fields, gaining first-hand insight into different career paths and helping them discover the best fit for their future.
These real-world experiences often shape — and sometimes reshape — students’ career goals. "One student who planned to become a nurse developed a passion for Respiratory Therapy after shadowing in that department," says Ms. Jarrell. "Another realized nursing wasn’t the right fit but through additional shadowing within our school system, discovered a love for Speech Therapy and is now pursuing that degree in college."
